Speller family of White Roding
« on: Sunday 01 August 04 22:54 BST (UK) »

Is anyone else researching the Speller family of White Roding in Essex?

Mary Ann Speller, born White Roding 1860, was my great-great grandmother.  She married William Wade, who was born in Epping in 1860.  I have them in the 1901 census and have found William and Mary in the 1881 census.  They did eventually move to the Leyton area but I am not sure when.  Their children included Lilian, Cissie, Bertie, Percy Dundonald Wade, and Rose, my great-grandmother.

Hello Mrs Lizzy,
I have looked at the 1861 index for Essex, and I am unable to find a Mary Ann Speller, in White Roding , born in 1860. Where did you get this date/year from. I am happy to post the indexes that relate to births in White Roding, but just querying the info you have.
Maybe, like many of my lot, they were in the area for a very short period of time, following the farming work?

It's the information given in the 1901 census - she and William are both aged 40.  Her birthplace is given as White Roothing (I put it as White Roding) and William's as Epping.  I have found a birth entry, either on FMD or 1837online, it slips my mind for the moment, for Mary Ann Speller born 1860 in White Roding.    I understand there were quite a lot of Spellers in White Roding - I don't have the impression they were only around for a short time.  I'm afraid I don't yet know who her parents were, as I haven't ordered the certificate yet.

Hi,
I can confirm there is a Mary Ann Speller registered birth in the Sept 1860 quarter in the Dunmow district, and by 1891 she and William are living at
53 Stewart Road, Wanstead. They are both aged 31. Their eldest son is William aged 10, which is similar to the 1901 detail, including Williams job is the same.
She is not obviously in the 1861 White Roothing census, but I am sure she is about somewhere.

Thanks very much you two.   The area is not actually that far from where I live, especially in Aussie or US terms - practically next door!  I suspect Langdon Hills might be near Basildon, still never mind, hey?!
