Dear all, My g/g/g/father John Lumsden Nelson (b. 16/3/1833 Canongate). On his baptism his surname is recorded as 'Neilson'. He was in Aberdeen by 1855-6 at the latest. His parents are Robert Nelson/Neilson and Elizabeth Lumsden.
On Robert & Elizabeths marriage record they are recorded as living at 281 High St., Canongate. The wedding was certified by a Joseph Nelson, combmaker of Coul's Close (a relative?) and a Robert Watt.
Robert Nelson/Neilson was a combmaker. He was not listd with the family on the 1841 census. The family was not living in Edinburgh for the 1851 census. He was listed as dead by 1866 (the fact that his wife is listed as 'Hawker' on 1841 census makes me think he may have been dead even then if she had to earn a living)
Can anyone think of other records to try - apprenticeship etc. which may exist and shed light on his origins. I have ordered Canongate memorial inscriptions. Cas

Hi I find it interesting that you too have the sme problem as I do with the name, either NELSON or NEILSON My gt gt grandmother was Euphemia Nelson, but I found later in my research that her name became changed to Neilson, so it does get a bit confusing trying to find out just what the original name is ment to be. Was the difference caused by either their inability to read and the name being put down as it sounded because of their accent?
I do find though, that its fairly easy to identify that you have the right person, if everything else "fits" so now I don`t let the name change bother me.
I also have the same problem with another gt grandmother her maiden name was Paddison, and several times the certificates show her as Pattison, this leads to people sending me messages telling me of the "correct" name, so now I always try to remember when posting a query about her to make sure I use both the spellings to identify her. Even her own children had stated her name to be PaTTison, again she was unable to read and this would have started the inaccuracy, she must however have had something written down the spelling of her husband`s name and was able to show this to the registrar etc, his surname was Geoghan, and has always been spelled correctly (at least in England, he was born in Ireland) But, I wonder why she did not have anything with her name printed or written down that she could use! She may not have had her own birth certificate with her correct name on it, all her siblings have the correct spelling of the name recorded, she was the only one with the wrong name, perhaps she was the only one who could not read?

I find spelling on many names starts to vary quite a bit once one gets back to the 1830s - a few lines of mine start to change a bit (HENDRY/HINDRY/HENRY, THOMSON/THOMPSON etc.)...
