HADLEIGH GUILDHALL
« on: Saturday 13 August 05 08:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi, Everyone,
Last Thursday I spent another wonderful day exploring places in Suffolk where my LINGLEY family of blacksmiths, mainly, lingered for a while.  Visited Newton, where my gt-gt-grandfather was buried, also Nayland (good lunch by the river at The Anchor), Stoke-by-Nayland, and Polstead where a nice lady was bedecking the church with fragrant flowers for her nephew's wedding today.
But the piece de resistance was the visit to Hadleigh Guildhall, where a lady conducted a tour of this magnificent 15thC building for those who wished it.  She does this after 2 p.m. on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon; you can also sit in the delightful garden at the back and have tea with cream and jam on your scones (I still had some room left for those even after lunch in Nayland.)
What a great county Suffolk must be to live in...

Sue,
I hadn't realised until a few months ago that I had a family line of blacksmiths in the 19th C and back to the 17thC at least, in this county.  Very proud of the fact, but where all that testosterone and sweat disappeared to by the 21st Century, I have no idea.  I am the world's least practical man, and the thought of working away in a forge or smithy all day is quite horrifying!  But all those lovely (and somehow claimed) rural villages provide immense pleasure today.
