William STUBBINS
« on: Sunday 14 August 05 08:32 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

Please can anybody help Huh?  I m trying to find William Stubbins and his Mother Elizabeth. I ve had the 1851 Suffolk census index checked but no luck. William was illigitimate and born in the Haverhill Workouse. Birth registered in January 1852.  Can t find them on 1861 census either.

I m wondering if they may show up in the Risbridge Poor Law Union in the first half of the decade or maybe just Elizabeth prior to his birth.  No baptism records exist from the workhouse during this period but he may have been baptised outside in Haverhill Parish.  I know nothing of Elizabeth s roots hence the search!!

If anybody can shed some light I d be most grateful.

   Regards

Hi NIMROD

It may be worth contacting the Suffolk Record Office to see what admission records survive, as these can be an invaluable source of biographical data.

Did he survive the year?
STUBBINS, William 1852 December Deaths Risbridge Volume 4a page 222

Often on censuses inmates of institutions are shown only with their initials. That is the case for the workhouse on the 1861 census where there is an E.S. female aged 24 farm servant born Birdbrook Essex. The next entry is for W.S., a boy aged 8 but his birthplace is also given as Birdbrook just over the county border. However I would think it unlikely that they were your Stubbins having spent the past 8 years in the workhouse (though they could have come back). There were Stubbings born Birdbrook showing on the census.
This could and is likely to be a complete wild goose chase however. Rick is right in his advice to you, you need to check if any workhouse records have survived first.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  I have checked with SRO but they only have records of the workhouse dating from 1894.  I must say that these two initials are a remarkable coincidence if not correct.  William s age is slightly out and Elizabeth would ve been very very young when she had him but not impossible!!!

Yes, William did survive and I ve traced him on the 1881 .91 and .01 Essex censuses in Maldon.  Each census gives his birthplace as Haverhill.  Marriage certificate states illigitimate, no Father s name given.  This William is the only possible one I could find in the GRO indexes.  Birth certificate gives Elizabeth as Mother but no Father entered.  Given the notorious discrepancies of censuses I feel these are probably the Stubbins people in question.  A check of Birdbrook baptisms in order I think.

    Thanks again for your help
