I am interested in learning about my GGGGF, John ROBSON birth??? Know of a marriage about 1838 in CUL, and possibly died about 1884. Especially want to see if I can learn more about the time between 1799 - 1838. RedFox

Hi, Is there any chance that you have a little more information to help identify the correct John? It is difficult to identify him, there are several around that time. Regards, Frances

Thanks for replying, Frances. I know a lot more about John Robson after 1838 when he married Jane Wilkinson. He died 27 Dec. 1884 1884 in Newtown, Aspatria, CUL, Eng. There are a lot of years before his marriage to Jane Wilkinson that I would like to find out about.
However, I know what you mean about how common the name is. That's been my biggest problem.
The only thing I "know" and that's an educated guess is his father's name was Andrew. I dedeuced that from the fact that John and Jane's first child, a boy, born 1838 was named Andrew. He died in infancy. The second child, also a boy, was born 1840 and named Andrew. This Andrew is my ancestor. A family researcher thinks John Robson's father was Andrew born in Cumberland. So maybe his mother was born in Newcastleton and she were visiting her family?? RedFox

Hi Redfox, I found this one in a place called Castleton, I looked on Genuki and found the explanation below. So am posting this one for your consideration. I wonder if the Andrew could come from Janes family? Regards, Frances

Thanks, Frances. It's certainly a possibility. My information is very iffy and yours is as close as mine. You're right. Andrew could be someone else's name; I know it wasn't Jane's father (James). It could have been a grandfather or uncle who was special in the family.
I'll accept the information with cautious optimism. I'll copy it to the Notes section and use it to compare to other info I might find.
I see the data is from the FHL. I probably was trying to be too specific on the date.
Thanks for checking. I appreciate the insight. RedFox

Since I first posted the message on John Robson, I have gained more information. The marriage was 21 May, 1838 at Plumbland Parish church. Another researcher has sent me a copy of that record so now I have the father's names of both John and his wife, Jane Wilkinson. John's father was Andrew Robson; Jane's father was James Wilkinson. Hopefully, I'll be able to pursue a search into John's parents. Went to Cumbria last month and learned John's date of death was Dec. 1884. He died of old age at 85 years of age. RedFox
