Hi, On the transcript register for Woolpit, there is a marriage between John Rice and Mary Blomfield,( John was from Elmswell) they were married on 15 October 1754. On the same page there is a marriage for Charles Rice who married Unice Woolsey on 28 september 1802. Could John Rice and Charles Rice have been father and son? Thoughts please Thank you Wj

Hi WJ,
Could be father and son or even Grandfather and Grandson.
For instance.....
If you guessed that John was 25 when he married (1754) and had children straight away, and his son was 25 when he married and had a son and that son (Christopher) was 23 when he married (1802) it would add up.
I'd have a look at the parish registers and see if you can find children of John and see where that leads you.
Good luck Tabitha

FreeBMD only covers the civil registration which began in 1837. Apart from a few very local censuses the first surviving and useful (giving names but not relationships) national census was in 1841. The first census to give relationships and places of birth was 1851. Woolpit St. Mary's burial registers are on the national burial index. No Rice burials in the parish in the C18th. They don't begin until the early 1800s. No adult John burial until 1861 and he was aged 56. There was a Charles Rice buried 5th November 1859. He was aged 87, so birth crica 1772 which would make him 30 if it was this Charles who married in 1802. You could ask for a look up on the 1851 census for Woolpit to see where this Charles' place of birth was. You need also to bear in mind that marriages take place by tradition in the wife's parish not the husband's, so if they are different the man usually marries out of parish. The evidence from the burial register would seem to indicate than neither John or Charles may have been born in Woolpit. The evidence from the national burial index pinpoints Rices in the adjacent parish of Elmswell being buried in the C18th, not in Woolpit. Neither Woolpit or Elmswell has coverage on the IGI

Hi,
Valda's good advice has covered it all
The only thing I can think to add is if you don't find the right answers in the 1851 census, the 1841 census should tell you if the person was born in or out of the census county (providing you can find them in the first place ofcourse!). That would hopefully narrow down your parishes to search.
As Valda suggested you could request a look up on the Suffolk look up boards for the 1851 & 1841 census.
Just out of interest I checked on the 1861 for Suffolk to see if the name Unice (being I thought an unusual name!) had possible carried down the family to future generations - in Suffolk there were 8 women with the first name Unice One was aged 76 living with her husband Isaac with no surname transcribed.......not much help really!!
Cheers Tabitha
