Meaning of the name Sard
« on: Thursday 18 August 05 09:46 UTC (UK) »

I am researching the Moore family and they have carried the second christian name Sard down through the family.
John Sard Moore born 1855, his son Ellis Sard Moore born 1881 and his son John Sard Moore born 1909.
Does any one know what the origin of the name Sard is. Could it be John snr's mother's surname" His father was William moore born 1820 in Ireland according to the 1861 census and his mother's name is Mary Ann but don't know her surname - have looked in BMD but no luck.

Is Sard Irish ?

Would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks Cougar .  It is a start and interesting in the site. I had thought it to be more Irish but apparently not according to the website.

Cheers

Hi

There is also the IGI Middle Name Index which might be useful, or not as the case may be  Cheesy  I've found some interesting leads though it now and then ...

Thanks. I did have a look at that site but no real clues yet. Possibly a maternal surname .
Thanks for the hint anyway - always good to have another suggestion.

Cheers

I think you are probably right.  I knew a Sard family from London, but that was 20th century!
