Gordon from Enniskillen - Originally Scottish?
« on: Thursday 18 August 05 12:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

I have just discovered that my gg-grandmother was born in Enniskillen.  Her name was Helen or Ellen Gordon, b. 1870, and I have been fortunate enough to find her parents and siblings already.

What I am curious about is that I always thought that Gordon was a Scottish name.  She certainly moved to Glasgow by 1893 because she married William McCormick there in that year.  I am pretty sure she wasn't a Catholic, as she married William McCormick in the Scottish Unitarian (?) church.

I have done a little reading regarding the Scots and English coming into Ireland after the Irish were defeated in the 1600's, and I am wondering if the Gordons were one of these families?  Is there any way to find out?

Thanks for reading,

Nina

Nina:
BBC has a good site on the Plantation of Ulster.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/war/plantation/index.shtml

Thank you Pat,

That was a very informative site.  Not a very pretty history though.  Makes me hope my Gordons were not involved!  Hopefully they just mosied in afterwards  Undecided.
