John Street- Waterford City : Completed
« on: Friday 17 April 09 20:23 UTC (UK) »

Hi, can anyone help out with the following information.

I've very recently received vague details that, my Grandmothers parents- J D Walsh & Mary Walsh
ran a business at- No 1 John Street, Waterford.

This would be around mid/late 1800's, to early 1900's.

I would be grateful to know, what type of business this was, also who the occupants were at that time.

My Grandmothers name was- Maud (Margaret) Walsh, and I believe she was born in this area in 1899, and

later married, Michael O'Neill,  (unsure where they wed) from the same area.

They moved to Dublin I believe, as young adults, but not sure of an exact date.

Any information would be of great help.

Regards, Mike.

I had a look at a Directory for 1894 and for 1909 and a Mason named Collins was at number 1 for both years.

Thanks Vasaborg.

I may have been given the wrong street number, I'll try and re-check that info.

What is interesting is, apparently one of John's sons- William, (born C. 1890) emigrated

to Detroit- America, and set up business, as a Plumber.

Hi, and a huge thank you to Vasaborg.

Following up on your info for, 64/65 John Street, I came across the following.

Passenger list from - Queenstown to United States (New York) aboard the S.S. Lusitania

on the 19/02/1911 - William Walsh and a Lizzie Walsh. (wife)  He gives his occupation

as a Plumber, and his nearest  relative as, J D Walsh (Father) of 64/65 John Street

Waterford.  From this I've been able to trace them on, the 1920 U.S. census living

in, Massachusetts, with 2 children, John, and Beatrice. Also on the 1930 U.S. census, now

living in Detroit, Michigan, again with the above children. His occupation on this census, is

entered as, Plumbing contractor.

So, most of the info seems to tie in, except for the initial address in John Street, what would

Confirm that I have the correct family is, if there was a Maud ( Margaret) Walsh living at that

address in Waterford, for the 1901 Census.

Regards, Mike.
