Traffik Street Chapel, Derby

Hi

One of my ancestors was a Methodist Minister who used to preach at the Traffick Street Chapel, Derby, during the mid 1800's. I am interested to find out more about this chapel.

So far I have a couple of photographs from Derbys 'Picture the Past' site, but other than these, can find no other information.

For instance, in his will my ancestor has spelt Traffick with a 'k' and not a 'c', so was it originally spelt this way? He was a literate man who wrote a book in his time, so I do not think this was mis-spelling.

Any other info/pictures or general thoughts on this building would be truly welcome.

Try Derby Evening Telegraph, they have a Bygones supplement in their Tuesday edition, Very interesting, have suggested it to others with good results.

Sorry to reply so long after your posting, but the following may be of interest.

I presume that the chapel was that of the Congregationalists, which was sited on the junction of Traffic Street & London Rd. It was built in 1846-48 by Henry Isaac Stevens, with a large Corinthian portico.

The chapel was converted into the Coliseum cinema & subsequently demolished to make way for a traffic island.

I imagine you have the information you need about Traffic Street Chapel - there is still a smallish chapel on Traffic Street now converted to commercial use, but don't know which denomination it used to be.

Bulmer's Directory 1895  says it's a Primitive Methodist Chapel.
