POOLE are there any clergy?
« on: Friday 19 August 05 11:39 UTC (UK) »

Are there any clergy called POOLE in the Shropshire annals anywhere?

How do I find out?

Thank you

Dear Maidmarionoops

Thank you so much for this information - it does chime in with what I know of the family history - many of them were clergy of some description, although some were married into the family and not actually called Poole themselves.

How do I find the register to which you refer?

I know that the Midlands heartland was their area, as well as Somerset and the south-west, but a few dispersed to livings in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire too.  One went to Gravesend, Kent.

One of my cousins was Precentor of the new Coventry Cathedral - Joseph Poole - and he is mentioned on the internet somewhere.

Thank you again for your help - very kind

Best wishes

Hi Imison,
Found these if they are any help to you,  1/jan/1674 Will  Poole came in Curate of ye parish of Lybotwwood,

( St Chads Shrewsbury , records )
Richard Poole Curate, signes register till nov 1640.

( same Source )
7/march/1643  Mr Richard Poole minester of this parish was buried.

I did come accross a couple of churchwardens as well, do you want these or are you only intrested in the main office position?.  There are 540 hits on my disc with the exact surname POOLE , ( Shrop, parish, register approx 1530/1820) They seem to be pretty evenly spread accross the county,
drop me a line if you want a lookup before 1820 (excluding R.C records, these are not on my disc) and I will do my best,
Best of luck,
regards Pete.
( p.s I spelt Lybotwwood as it is on the register, I think they mean Leebotwood)

Dear Pete

I would be glad of any references to POOLE that you have.

I know that Church references are strong in the family but do not know everyone - as there are several hundred Poole members.

I know that one of my ancestors WAS a churchwarden so maybe they kept it ECCLESIASTICAL as it were!

I am very grateful to you

best wishes

Dear Pete

There are some specific questions surrounding JOSEPH Poole born in Upton Magna, Shropshire about 1834 [in the 1881 census says he is 47].

IF there is anything about POOLE family in Upton Magna and the immediate environs, this would be brilliant as I believe they were farming stock.  Joseph himself married Martha [Ree?] and became a BAKER in Staffordshire which became his means of making a living.

Upton Magna is still a very small place with only a few hundred inhabitants so if my family were living there, it is likely that any POOLE members were theirs [also Atcham nearby and Oswestry for example].

Thank you so much

Imison

Hi Imison,

Ive just done a walk of the streets of  Upton Magna on the 51 disc, unfortunately I cannot find a POOLE surname, Can you give me some names that run through your family, as you will know usually the first male child was chr, after dad, the first female, after the mothers, mother
I live not more then 6 miles from where my genes come from (i think 1783)
and I still do not understand our archaic system of registrations, are you local to Shrewsbury?.
I will find your wardens, and send again
Yours Sincerely, ( now thats old fashioned )
Pete.

Hello again

JOSEPH POOLE was born about 1834 and he married MARTHA [possibly REE].  Both were from Shropshire according to the censuses of England.  However, whereas Martha was from BROM CROFT MILL or Bron Croft Mill, Joseph Poole was from Upton Magna.

Unfortunately I have no idea of the predecessors.  That is what I am searching for.

I am of the belief that REVEREND JOHN POOLE of Enmore Somerset was an ancestor too.

Thank you very much

Dear Sylvia

Thank you very much for looking for me - I am most grateful.

It makes me wonder if the marriage you found might be either the said Joseph and Martha who are my ancestors.

I know that Martha had a short surname but it was indecipherable when we saw the original document [now, unfortunately, lost] and it looked like a surname of Ree or Pee or Pec.  There was a Martha Ree in Shropshire that I found in the 1851 census but I could find nothing for Joseph Poole at all in the 1851 census.  However, some of the census is lost.  Maybe Joseph and his family were in the lost documentation.

I do not have many other names for the family, as POOLE was the main one in that family.

The 1861 census you show is definitely the right one.

Also the 1881 census.

I know that DAVIS was in the family because FRANK DAVIS is shown as a NEPHEW in a census in the late nineteenth century.

If this means that Frank Davis was the nephew of JOSEPH, this would mean, probably, that Joseph Poole had a SISTER who married someone called DAVIS and then she had a child called Frank.  There is only one slight problem with this - by 1881 Joseph was almost 50, and any sister of his would likely to have been MUCH younger to be of child-bearing age in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.  Not impossible but needs bearing in mind.  Of course, Frank Davis might be a GREAT-NEPHEW and that would muddy the waters further!!

Thank you again for all your help

Researching my Poole ancestors looked at Parish Record fiche for Montford Parish 1662-1812. Found a Joseph Pool was churchwarden there in 1744. Have lists of Pool(e) entries for Montford if any use to you.

Dear Maggie

I had a computer crash and never realised you had written - my apologies.

I notice you say you have Poole ancestors.  Where is Montford?

I would be most interested to know your information

best wishes
