This is a link to Durham County Council's online certificate ordering service. They say they have ALL marriages in the area since 1837, most births, but only recent deaths. If you find a marriage you can find out the spouse. It's really useful, try it!

All census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Currently researching: ABRAHAMS (Essex/Woolwich), CARPENTER (Kent) CLEMENTS (London), CRADDOCK (Sheerness) HORTON (Birmingham) MUNCASTER (Whitehaven then Manchester, Scotland, Suffolk and Canada!) TANCOCK (Devon/Cornwall), WILSON (Edinburgh) among others.....
I agree it's an excellent website, and usually certificates ordered online arrive within a few days, but be warned, I ordered 4 certificates on 13th September and they haven't come yet (6th Oct) - when I queried this, there was an apology, the explanation is:- from 8th May 2006 a single unified Registration District for the County of Durham was established, all Birth, Death and Marriage records are now based at the central office at Bishop Auckland. As a result of this change all postal and online requests are currently taking approximately 15 working days to process.
