Wise Woman of Wing
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 12:20 BST (UK) »

Hi Mike and Paul

Thought you would like to know that Lynn and I now feel 99% certain this lady was an ancestor of ours I'm still sorting through the facts and the legends about her and if your interested I'll send you a copy when I'm done, she's quite interesting. and Mike I think I've solved the puzzle as to why she was listed as 'Head' in 1851 and why 'Mr. Woodcock' was living elsewhere although I'm still trying to find a way of seeing the original returns.
Thanks for all the help you've given me so far.

Hello
Hello Bernie
I saw your posting on the rootschat board and thought that I'd contact you regarding Amelia Woodcock alias the Wise Woman of Wing. I live in the next village to Wing (Pilton) and for some time have been fascinated about the snippets of information that I have seen on this woman. I should like to know more but apart from census returns I can find no original documentation concerning her life and skills as a herbalist. I've heard that her remedies were still on sale in Boots in Uppingham until after the Second World War. However again I cannot prove or disprove this. I was wondering therefore if you could provide some additional information on this remarkable woman.
