They can 'do' 20 generations each!
|
I am scratching my head over this one so would appreciate any thoughts.
Great, great, great grandad George Smart born c 1839-41 (depending on the census). 1851 Westerleigh in Glos with Dad Job
1861 no trace - but that isn't the puzzle - annoying, but not a puzzle (I have got Job by the way! )
1871 - with wife Matilda (born Frome Somerset) and sons William and Thomas in Trevethin (Abersychan). 15 River Row.
1881 - same address, same wife, sons William and Tom as above and also other children Magt Ann, Sarah Ann and Fred
1901 - living with same wife, but moved to 20 Union St and only children Martha and Henry living with them.
With me so far?
OK time warp back to 1891 - 15 River Row - check Thomas - check Sarah - check Fred - check Martha and Harry - check, all ages near enough
Father George - check, age near enough, oK says born somerset, but hey could just be a slip of the enumerator's pen!
Wife Berlinda , born Taunton
Who she? Why me??
What's going on??
Puzzled
Julie

Almost as bad as Smith), Walker - Somerset, Llewellyn And, no don't laugh...Crump...I think it's great! And of course, if I ever do manage to do a successful look up it is crown copyright and all that legal stuff! Seriously Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi
I have had a look at the census sheets, writing nice and clear, so no mistakes there. As you say it's a puzzle....and I have not got any idea how you will get round it.....but good luck....you will need it.

Hi Julie
Not a solution to the major issue, but maybe a possibility for 1861?
RG9/3997 136 65
ADAMS Samuel H M 26 - coal miner - Monmouth ADAMS Mary A W M 23 - ditto ADAMS Matilda dau 5 - ditto ADAMS William son 2 - ditto SMART George boarder U 20 - coal miner - England
Address: Aberstruth, Monmouthshire
On the other issue - I wonder if it is just a case of confusion? Have you got any certs? The children's birth certs and a marriage would help!
kind regards, your cuz, Arranroots

Thanks both, it's reassuring to know that it isn't me!
Arranroots (hi nearly almost certainly cuz!!) - that was going to be my next step...I think I am going to go with simple confusion. Said quicckly it is just about possible to mishear Matilda as Berlinda?? Especially if she was not literate Pity Matilda Adams is too young and born in the wrong place, might have solved more than one question...oh, well!
Will let you know if I ever solve it
Regards
Julie
