St Woolos Newport
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 00:36 UTC (UK) »

I am a little confused as to what defines this area in Newport. Is it a separate area or is/was it part of Newport itself. I understand the main church is St Woolos so is it just the area that surrounds the church? Many thanks for any enlightenment

Hi,

I hope this explains it!

If you look at the 'nearby places' most of them such as Pillgwenlly & Malpas are now parts of the City of Newport.

St Woolos is the name of the parish church of Newport, the population explotion in the 19th century and the building of Newport Docks meant that other smaller parishes were founded such as Holy Trinity & St Pauls both in the Pill and lower commercial st area, also older parishes came into the borough boundries in the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century such as Christchurch, Bettws, Bassaleg, Malpas etc etc.
