Now what's wrong?  I want to update my website but my ftp site, which I bookmarked, contains only 2 folders, one named "pub" which is empty and one named "mail" which doesn't contain the web pages.  My website is still there, so where's the ftp?

Hi suttontrust,

you are trying to upload to "anonymous", the public bit of rootschat.net

make sure your FTP account is correct:

user = godden_richards_rootschat_net
password = if-you-don't-know-then-nobody-else-does

good luck,
Bob

But how do I get to anything to log into?  When the ftp site comes up there is no request for login, just the empty site.

I don't know whether you can get to your FTP site through favourites.

Why not just start your ftp program, and open a new account ?

user/host = godden-richards.rootschat.net
password = if-you-don't-know-then-nobody-else-does

Hi suttontrust,

Do you mean "File Manager" or your own FTP programme?

If it is your programme - make sure under properties that you have the name of your site mine is "batemans-history.rootschat.net" plus your password - which I think is what Bob said.

You can use the file manager for bits and pieces - but takes to long if there are many files to upload!
But the same login as above.

Hope this helps - let us know where you are up to.

Cheers

Keith

No, let me make clear what is happening.
I go to ftp://godden-richards.rootschat.net.  There is nothing there - not my files, not a request for login.
What does it mean - "Why not just start your ftp program, and open a new account ?"  I would if I could.
I've got Filezilla and I've tried going through that.  No dice.
I'm fed up!

Hi

Think Bob will have to answer this one  - but have just been to Filezilla site and the screen shot of the programme look similar to mine.
So - run Filezilla and you should have a "Server List" - on that should be the name which you gave your site - highlight this and click - it should take you to your site - with all the files listed - if not check the properties box as I suggested above.

Don't get to frustrated - one of us will get you there in the end  Grin Grin

I see from another posting that it's not been your day - we will make sure it gets better  Grin Grin

Cheers

Hi suttontrust,

you definitely can't get to your protected site through  ftp://godden-richards.rootschat.net. I just tried that with boco.rootschat.net and I got the same public, unprotected area that you did.

You'll have to do as Keith suggested, go in through your RootsChat file manager, or any other FTP program.

I know you are both trying to be helpful, and I really do appreciate it, but when you say things like "go in through your RootsChat file manager, or any other FTP program" I want to bash my head against the wall.  You sound just like the IT people at work.  Keith, I've tried Filezilla again.  Can't find anything called "Server list" but I've got to my ftp site which shows just what I said originally.  When I updated my site the last time I was able to go to the ftp site and delate everything so that I could then upload the new pages (created by Legacy, so straightforward).  Now I can't find the files to delete them.  If I try to upload new webpages what will happen?
Sorry if I sound tetchy - I feel tetchy.

This should take you to the RootsChat file manager:

I just went to my FTP address using Internet Explorer.

ftp://ss-rhondda.rootschat.net

I was presented with a window with two folders in it.

I right-clicked on the mail folder, selected 'open', and another window opened.

I then went to the drop down 'File' menu, and selected the 'Login As' option.

After entering my username and password, I gained access to a window with all my website files.

Things are going from bad to worse!  I've just tried to go to my ftp file - ftp://godden-richards.rootschat.net - and it tells me (twice) that windows couldn't access it.  I'm going to bed now, I've had enough for one day.

I'm still here.  Got there, SS, did what you said but all that opens is a collection of non-html files and a gedcom called cadman.  Nothing to do with me.  And the index html says it's the Sewell family tree.  So I feel vindicated.  Clearly my ftp has been usurped by somebody else's and I'd very much like to know how to get it back.

You are almost there...

When you get to the screen with the CADMAN gedcom file, do the following:

Click on the 'File' menu at the top of the window.
The first option in the list should be 'Logon As'
Click this, then enter your username: 'godden-richards.rootschat.net'
and your password.

You should then get a window with YOUR files in. You can use your mouse to pick up files from your computer to this window, and delete unwanted files, too.

Update:
I tried this earlier, with my details and it worked. I just re attempted it, but it didn't work Huh
It's getting late, I'll try again tomorrow. Sorry.

I'm certainly not an expert so this is a wild guess, but if you bookmarked your ftp site, perhaps what you are viewing is a cache of that page.

When you next click on it, and it opens, click the 'refresh' button on the Explorer toolbar and it might show your full site.

Or then again, suttontrust - I might be talking a load of rubbish (for which apologies!)

cheers
