I seem to remember seeing somewhere that the tree at the crossroads in Sydling St. Nicholas was significant in terms of a place for settling disputes between farmers and their workers. Can anyone help me to remember where this might have been? Thanks. Toby.
Thank you Nanny Jan. I have now discovered the source and the result may be of interest to others.
The source was a very interesting book Sydling St. Nicholas Glimpses of its History edited by Sheila Phillips 1993 page 16 " It is recorded in 1848 that a singular custom prevailed in Sydling whereby the farmers met every Sunday after service under the Old Cross Tree to hear any complaints that might be made by the labourers" It would seem they didn't want any more martyrs in Dorset!
