Although my grandmother's family seemed to be based in Workington and Harrington, the name whitehaven was also mentioned. Could you tell me of the connection? Is Whitehaven as district as well as a town? Is Cockermouth a separate district?

My great grandparents married in 1889 at the presbyterian church of Harrington, district of Whitehaven. They were James FERGUSON and Elizabeth LEGGAT.
The LEGGATs were based in HARRINGTON but James FERGUSON worked in Workington at the steel works, and the children were born there. His mother and sister were buried in Workington as well.

thanks!

Whitehaven is a Reg District, as is Cockermouth (which contains Workington).  Harrington is close to Workington but is in Whitehaven District.

For info on the Cumberland Reg Districts, look here-

Thanks for clarifying Geoff. It's sometimes hard to figure these things out from afar!

Andrew are you still doing lookups and cemetery pictures? I am trying to trace a Carrick family who had a shop in Whitehaven.

What type of shop? and when if you know?

A bit wet for cemetaries still, but later on yes, busy decorating (I hate DIY) at the moment but will be going back to the records office in a few weeks again, I've had a bit of a break from it, but will be going back soon

Grocers apparently

They lived in Scotch Street, Whitehaven

William Carrick born 1850 in Thursby (he was widowed but his wife Catherine in buried in Carlisle - at least she is mentioned on the headstone)

William Arthur Carrick born 1880 died 1901
Catherine Carrick born 1881 died 1881
Katie Carrick born 1884

All three children were born in Whitehaven.

I would love to know where he and the two children are buried (they would have been C of E) and a photo would be even better.

They ended up living with Williams sister, Agnes Rowan and she was a yeast agent

Many thanks

Do you still spare time on hand. I have scoured the IGI LDS records and can not find the death of a John Steele abt 1828 to 1832, most likely before 1830. John Steele married Christian Kinley on the Isle of Man in 1827 and his son Richard was christened 1828 at Holy Trinity church in Whitehaven. On Richard's death certificate his father is named as Rupert, however IGI records have "Rupert" as being John. If you come across any Steele's at the Holy Trinity buriel grounds from the early 1800's I would appreciate any help locating John Steele's family who are from Cumberland England, I know nothing else about the ancestors of John.
Christian Kinley moved back to the Isle of Man and remarried in 1839 - so there would be no point trying to find her in Cumberland.
Richard grew up on the Isle of man and migrated to Australia where he died.
