Barna Post Office, Freshford
« on: Wednesday 24 August 05 20:11 UTC (UK) »

My Grandfather William Lawrence and Grandmother Kate Lawrence owned Barna Post Office. I am trying to find my Grandmother's maiden name and any other info. Can anybody help?

Hello annrees,

Do you know when your Grandparents owned the Post Office? I imagine some people know something about
them as Post Offices tend to play an important role in small communities. They were probably regular church attenders. There may well have been an article in one of the local papers when they retired.

I was in the post office as a child. It wasn't in Freshford but in Barna which is halfway between Freshford and Johnstown.

I remember Mrs Lawrence before she died and the post office (which was connected to a pub) was sold on.

The post office was closed and the pub was redeveloped into the OK Coral.

I think the Kenny family still own it.

I'll ask my dad tomorrow morning for the information you need.

Ummm.

Do you know Patrick and Elizabeth Lawrence?

My father's recollections are a little embarassing.

We (the Butlers) had another farm in Knocknamuck (in addition to our one in Barna), which we rented out to the Lawrence family.

They failed to keep up with the payments so we evicted them.  Embarrassed

It is Elizabeth Lawrence that I remember in the pub/post office. Is she your mother?

The pub is now called Kenny's Bar though the locals all remember it as Lawrence's (pron. Lah-rences)

Hi ann, were William and Kate your Fathers Parents or your Mothers parents? all you have to do is get the Birth Cert of which ever one of your parents was born to William and Kate and it will give Kates Maiden name.
