Hello all,
I am trying to research my family roots in Bathwick:
Name George HALES Born c. 1863 1 Grove St Bathwick (?) Fathers occupation – Publican
Any info or advice on how to proceed would be much appreciated. I am very new at this research, and live half a world away in Australia. Links to useful websites would also be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
(Don't mention the cricket!)

Hi Mike,
Nothing leaps out immediately. Where did you get the information about the father's name? What is his name? Any other clues?
Ros
PS. As a Kiwi I'm a bit torn about the cricket. Can't decide which is worse - a smug Aussie or a smug Pom. Since I'm feeling really kind, I won't mention the rugby either ...

Ros,
Thanks for the reply. Most of the information comes from the British Army Pay Book, which back in the 1800s seemed to serve the role of general record book. Unfortunately, that is all the info I have. I will quiz my father to see if he has any more.
Thanks again,
Mike.
PS - Its funny about the "enmity" between the Kiwis and the Aussies. I always thought it is a bit like sibling rivalry - we love to hate each other, but watch out if an outsider tries to threaten one of the family!! When the French clew up the Rainbow Warrior in Aukland, the feeling this side of the Tasman was "How dare they attack our neighbour".
On the other hand, we might well barrack for the French when they play the All Blacks.

Hi again, Mike,
So was George Hales in the army? When? Where?
Ros
PS - A most interesting thing about the Rainbow Warrior fiasco has just been revealed. Margaret Thatcher found it all very difficult, politically, and chose to keep quiet in order to keep on side with the French. At the time we lived just across the harbour in Auckland. Can't swear to having heard a big bang in the night ...
Re cricket. Yes, I find myself quietly hoping you'll win. We're hoping to go to England next year, though, and my husband says he'd really like the English to be feeling very cheerful when he gets there! A long story, but my g-g-aunt was once the official 'Keeper of the Ashes'! (She was an Aussie.)

Hello again,
George Hales enlisted in Royal Engineers 5 June 1884 (in London). His regimental number was 18807, though it is given as 18801 in one document. His trade was recorded as carpenter. We even have a bit of a description:
Height – 5’6” Eyes – Blue Hair – Dark brown
Religion – Church of England (later changed to RC when he married) Service abroad – Malta – embarked 28 Apr 1887, disembarked 7 May 1887 Married Rosina (Rose) Sedgemore in Malta, 19 March 1889 Children: 1 M John Edgar - 6 October 1891 (Malta) 2 F Teresa Victoria 4 Apr 1893 (Malta) 3 M Henry George 17 Sep 1894 (York)
He reached the rank of Warrant Officer (on 12 June 1900)
Henry George Hales was my grandfather, though I never knew him - he died before I was born. Henry was also a career soldier. He served in the British Army in WW1, in France and the Middle East. After the war, he left the army and migrated to Australia, where he joined the Australian Army. He remained in the Army until after WW2, though he did not serve overseas. He also became a Warrant Officer.
Regards
Mike

Hi Mike,
Here's a possibility:
1881 Higham Rd 17, Bedminster, Somerset, England
Martin H. Richards abt 1833 Bristol, Somerset, Head, coal agent Victoria Richards abt 1833 Bristol, Somerset, Wife Emily H. Hales abt 1861 Adelaide, Australia Step Daughter, George Hales abt 1864 Bath Step Son, apprentice carpenter Emily B. Richards abt 1861 Bristol, Somerset, Daughter Jane E. Richards abt 1860 Bristol, Somerset, Daughter
Interesting to see that Emily was born in Australia (which means the family can't be found in the 1861 census - but you might be ble to do some research in Oz. Wonder why they were there? Did the wife get homesick and insist on goinghome?!).
1871 15 Broughamhayer (?) Bldgs, Twerton Somerset
Victoria Hales abt 1841 Bristol, Somerset, Head (wid), annuitant Emily E Hales abt 1861 South Australia, Adelaide, Daughter George Hales abt 1864 Bath, Somerset, Son
MARRIAGE Dec q 1872, Bath Avon Somerset, 5c/1137 HALES, Victoria Richards, Martyn Henry
DEATH June q 1895, Bedminster 5c/460 Richards, Victoria Age at death: 62
Possible deaths of the father Hales, Alfred 1864 March, Bath Avon Somerset HALES, George 1866 March, Bath Avon Somerset HALES, Joseph 1866 March, Bath Avon Somerset HALES, Tamar 1866 September, Keynsham Gloucestershire Somerset
Also found this:
1871
Shaldon Back St, St Nicholas, Devon William Sedgemore abt 1819 Budley Salterton, Devon, Head, fisherman Maryann Sedgemore abt 1831 Exeter, Devon, Wife Ann Sedgemore abt 1869 Budley Salterton, Devon, Daughter Rosina Sedgemore abt 1866 Budley Salterton, Devon, Daughter Ann Sedgemore abt 1854 Budley Salterton, Devon, Niece William Wood abt 1817 Budley Salterton, Devon, Boarder
Finally, I couldn't stand not knowing, so looked him up on 1837online. This looks like your best bet for a birth reg:
HALES, George, Bath, June q 1863 5c/736.
Give it a go!
Cheers,
Ros
