Capel/Watkins family
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 04:36 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor, William Capel, born to John Capel and Mary Watkins in Cumnor in 1816. Mary Capel (nee Watkins died 1817 aged 21). From then on William Capel disappears until he turns up in London on the 1851 Census in Somerstown.

What i am struggling with is....where did he go? Possibly to her family after her death but as i am in Australia i am finding it hard to find her family as don't have much to go on. Would love to be able to place him somewhere between 1817 and 1851.....possibly still in the Oxfordshire area.

What I know is - She was born 1798, died 1.9.1817 aged 21.
Married in St Giles church Oxford. That's it I am afraid! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Watkins part of the name has carried on via William through the generations which is rather lovely so that she is not forgotten.

I've just checked the Oxfordshire FHS index to the 1841 census of Oxfordshire and North Berkshire (http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/) but there's no trace of a William CAPEL in his mid-20's.

Hence, it looks like he wasn't in Oxfordshire or North Berkshire on census night 1841.

Sally

This is a nice site for you        www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/external/cumnor/
with a lot of info on your family and the Parish of Cumnor..........John Capel born 1793 died 1853 ....... wife 1    Mary Watkins 1798-1817, when and where they married (difference of opinion to your info)........wife 2   Susan Bennett
.........William born 13th October 1816   etc etc
It even has pictures including one of a Percy Capel (relative?) in a cricket team in 1896............take it all in  Shocked

and have fun

Thank you Bryant....I have seen that site....will have to look once again at the marriage of JOhn and Mary and where I got St Giles church from ( have heaps of paperwork).  I actually went down to Cumnor before emigrating to Australia and myself and the Vicars wife went through the church safe!  It was then I found the marriage was not in Cumnor I think.

Still unable to trace where William went after his birth....that kind person whoever did the 1841 search can not trace him in oxfordshire or berks so possibly London where he later turned up??

Thanks again for you help,

Sally

Reveal the 1851 details......where in Somerstown, was William on his own? what was the 1851 census reference
It might help with tracing him in 1841?

Sally

I see that William Capel and Mary Roberts married in the June qtr of 1845 at St Pancras............have you got that cert? who are the witnesses? and the parents? where were they living at the time?

I don't think that Mary would have gone to Berkshire! all the work was in London..........so he would have gone to London........but what year?

Yes, i have the marriage cert - St Pancras Church..

William living at Randolph St St Pancras, Mary Roberts living at Southampton Terrace....

The fathers of William is John Capel Wheelwright (from Cumnor) have all his details...

And Mary's is William Roberts Gardener.

The witnesses are Thomas Roles Humphrey and Mary Ann Chore

Sally

Slowly but surely.............
In 1851 Randolph Street.......... HO107/1498/59-71 is in the district of Pancras and the sub district of Kentish Town
and so is
Southampton Terrace.........HO107/1498/221-223

so they lived near one another before marriage in 1845! ........ but who did they live with and for how long at that address? .............. the witnesses do appear to be resident (unless you know those names) ie when no family members available up pops the residents! .............downside....... it doesn't help find them when no other family members around!

Now............did they live at those addresses in 1841 and can we find them?
First lets see if anyone is recognisable in 1851 at those addresses........here goes............

Sally

No-one recognisable in 1851 at the two Streets in Kentish Town........I'll see if I can find those Streets in 1841?
Kentish Town is HO107/683 in 1841........Parish is St Pancras, Hamlet is Kentish Town

Sorry Sally

Found the Street/Terrace in 1841 but no-one recognisable................

Desperate measures..........find out who the witnesses are......they have unusual names so shouldn't be too difficult to find?
