I would appreciate it very much if someone could tell me the date of death of the following brother and sister who were born in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, but both ended up in Essex. I have their entries from the 1891 and 1901 census. They are first cousins to my grandfather (who was born here in Australia in 1865) and I would very much like to know when they died:
(1) Mary True, unmarried, born Market Deeping in 1859, living at 148 High Street, Rayleigh, Essex in 1901, when she was a housekeeper for Henry Gigney, a retired publican.
(2) Robert True, born Market Deeping in 1864. He later was a harness maker, and a commercial traveller in Wickford, Essex. He then had a draper and mercer's shop in High Street, Essex. He married a widow, Susannah Stebbing, but she predeceased him. They had no children. Robert is in the 1901 census living at Wickford and is in a 1917 Kelly's Directory as a draper and mercer (I have a photo of Robert in front of his shop which was sent to my great aunt by Robert, I think sometime in the 1920s or 1930s). Any help to find these deaths would be greatly appriecated.

Thank you for replying to my query. I appreciate it very much. No, I don’t have a date of death for Robert True or his sister Mary. All I really know is what I put in my query. My great-grandparents, (from Market Deeping) arrived in Australia in 1849 and Robert and Mary are children of my great-grandfather’s brother (who stayed in Market Deeping and is buried there with his wife. I have a photo of their headstone). Robert True corresponded with his first cousin, my great aunt, here in Australia and I think the correspondence was kept up in the 1920s and 1930s. Robert was then a widower and had no children. I have a photo of Robert in front of his draper and mercer’s shop in High Street, Wickford (probably taken sometime from the early 1900s to the 1930s?)
I met an elderly man from Wickford probably fifteen years ago now. This person was visiting Australia and I did not know him well (he was a relative of an acquaintance). He had no knowledge or interest in genealogy, but when he got back to England he found out where Robert’s shop was and sent me photos of the shop in the early 1990s. Which was very kind of him, as he did not know me, and was not interested in genealogy. I was hoping to find out if Robert died in Wickford and if he had a headstone, but did not like to ask too much, particularly as this person was elderly and frail. I did find out that Robert’s shop is now Sansom’s Menswear Store in High Street and have a clear colour photo of the shop, so I guess I am very lucky to at least know that about his shop.
I know less about Mary, Robert’s sister, apart from her baptism at Market Deeping. Then I found her in the 1881 census, living with her mother’s sister, at Beverly St Mary, Yorkshire. This aunt died and Mary then moved to Rayleigh. In the 1901 census she was housekeeper for Henry Gigney at Rayleigh. There was no oral history in our family about Mary corresponding with my great aunt, only “Cousin Robert”.
Donna, I would appreciate any help that you can give me to locate their dates of death and possible burial place and possible headstones. Do you have access to any headstone inscription lists for Rayleigh and Wickford? Or any information about the churchyards in these places. I am assuming that they would have been buried in a churchyard, not a council cemetery? I am hoping one day to track down a possible obituary for them, particularly for Robert. As he was a local businessman, I am hoping that he would rate an obituary in the newspaper of the day. Sorry my reply is so long for you to have to wade through! Regards, Aurora.

Thank you so much for your offer, but I do not want you to go out of the way or to be too greatly inconvenienced to find Robert's grave. It is very kind of you to take the time to reply to my query, so if you can help me I would be greatly appreciatiative. There is no hurry for you to find any information, just whenever it is convenient for you. I would be pleased to received any new info, at any time.
Actually I was thinking, there is a good chance that Robert does not have a headstone, but is buried in an unmarked grave. He would have had no known relatives in Wickford when he died, and as he was a childless widower, maybe there was no one to erect a headstone. Unless he made provision in his Will (if he left a Will) and his exectuor or a solicitor arranged to have a headstone erected. I do not know if he had any property to leave in a Will. I do not know if he owned or rented where his shop was (now Sansome's menswear shop) or if he owned a house, or where he was living in Wickford. Thanks again for your interest. kind regards, Aurora.
