What records are available for Wantage Workhouse?
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 22:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to view any workhouse records that may give me more information about the brother of my great great grandfather who ended up in there after his parent died. Are any entrance records or such available that would provide me with further information as to why he ended up in there? Is there anything like this available at the Berkshire Records office as I have looked on the website and not found anything obvious?

Time-wise I believe he will have entered the workhouse probably in 1887 when his mother died, and I know he died there in 1895. According to one census he was paralysed from birth, but I have found no further information on this on any other census or document so far.

If anyone could make me aware of what I can do to research this further I would appreciate it. I should be able to do the lookup myself once I know where to find the information.

Many thanks in advance,
Sahara

Hi Sahara,
Wantage Workhouse records are in the BRO. If you go to the BRO, you might also pop into the Berks Family History Soc.; they are in the same building. Apparently they have put a lot of the workhouse records on microfiche and offer them for sale at very reasonable prices. Not sure exactly what you might find, certainly worth looking.
Here is a very good website about the Wantage Workhouse

You might take a look at these, too.

Hi Carmela,

Thank you very much for your reply. Now I know I can access these records I at least know I can find out a bit more about the guy - although it will have to wait until I can get to the BRO again.  Smiley

Thanks again,
Sahara

Sahara,
just for your info, the BFHS and the BRO are not in the same building although it is very close and they share the same car park, but the BFHS is not always open when the BRO is. probably best to check before you go....
