Hi
According to the Sussex Marriage Index they actually married in Hailsham on 15 Oct 1807.  Wiliam is from Lenham, Kent and Mary of this parish.  The date you have is for the marriage licence issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 14 Oct 1807. William of KEN Lenham 21+ and Mary 20+  wcof John.   Not quite sure what the latter means.

Thank you for this information - I did not realise that William had come from Kent so this is very useful.

Hello Andrew and Andrea,

wcof means "with the consent of father", as Mary is a minor.

Variations are:
wcom; mother
wcog; guardian
wcop; parents

Phil

As Mary Boniface is in my direct line I would like to find out more about her Boniface relys.  From the info in these messages it would appear that she was born circa 1787, possibly in Hailsham and that her father was named John.

I wonder whether anyone might have any info about Mary's ancestors/siblings etc?  I would be grateful for any assistance with this.

Hello Andrew,

That's an old one you're digging up.  Smiley

There two John Boniface marriages in East Sussex around the time you are looking (I checked 1770 to 1790), which appear on the Sussex Marriage Index:

Eastbourne
22nd Nov 1785
John Boniface; Berwick
Mary Sinden; of this parish
by Banns
Witnesses: Mathew Richardson; Thos Hunt

Hailsham
19th Jan 1788
John Boniface; Friston
Charity Boniface; of this parish
by Banns
(no witnesses given)

IGI Batch No. C042331 has two baptisms for parents John and Mary Boniface in Laughton:
Mary; 18th March 1787
John; 15th June 1788

Unfortunately the IGI doesn't appear to cover Hailsham.

Regards,
Phil

Hello Phil

Yes, it is an old one - it has been a sticking point for me for a long time  Cry

Thank you very much for the information, although I must admit that I'm not too sure what to make of it!

I assume that one of the two marriages that you found is 'my' John.  The Hailsham marriage is a great fit location wise but the Jan 1788 date may be just marginally too late as Mary's age is given as 20 plus at the time of her marriage to William Douch in Oct '07.

Hopefully, someone will have information to enable this brick wall to be knocked down.
