Duplicate entries in BMD

I do transcription for FreeBMD and I've noticed quite a few occasions when what is obviously the same event is given twice with slight variations of the surname.  I suppose the person compiling the index wasn't sure of the spelling so hedged his bets by entering it both ways.  One of the ways in which bad handwriting affects future generations. Cool

I thought if it had been entered twice, the entries were put in bold, or italicised or something?

How about if I send you the occasional entry to transcribe?  I tried to do it myself but I nearly died of shame because I couldn't work the system out, so they took pity on me and said i could just e-mail them to them!

Hi Suttontrust,

I came across a name I was looking for that was duplicated.

The name had been registered twice once under the name of-

Maria Twite and then under Maria Twites.

Both had the same registration number. 

I gather they were not sure if the name had an 's' on the end or not.

I was under the impression that freebmd sends /will be sending out each page to two different transcribers as a form of error checking, and that is where duplicate entries arise.

Hi all - to MrsLizzy, there is no differentiation between the entries because the printed index treats them as separate events - you just have to decide which is the right one when you're looking it up.  Don't send me entries; we work from scanned pages of the index sent by the syndicate's moderator.  I get e-mails from people who think that I've added an entry from my own knowledge and have an interest in the family, but it's just ploughing through hundreds of entries on a page.  To Pauline - there is a system of proof-reading one's own entries.  I don't think they're done by two different transcribers.

I know about proof-reading, as I've done enough of them.

From the freebmd FAQPage.

All entries will be transcribed independently at least twice to ensure accuracy. We will happily accept some level of double keying as we go along. The "missing" sections will be tidied up in due course.

I stand corrected, Pauline.  A puzzle, though - each entry on the site has the transcriber's info attached to it.  If it's been done twice, how do they decide which transcriber's info to put?

As many of the index pages can now be viewed online at FreeBMD you can always take a look and see what you think it says.

By the way, when I've gone to the FRC to check unclear entries I've rarely had a problem reading the register. The problems the transcribers have are probably due to out-of-focus microfilming.

Actually you are all right.  Firstly, all entries will be double-keyed by two seperate people, once that has been done the entry changes to bold.  Secondly, when the lists were compiled, if they were unsure about a certain name they would enter it twice, but as they are slightly different, they have not been double-keyed until the second person comes along.  Also, we do have trouble reading certain scans due to bad filming which they are also trying to sort out at the moment.
