Gibsons in the circus?
« on: Tuesday 30 August 05 15:38 UTC (UK) »

A bit of a long shot, but thought I'd ask anyway...

Is anyone researching the name GIBSON in East Yorkshire with ancestors further back in West Yorkshire and even Westmorland?

Do you know of a possible circus or fairground connection to your GIBSONs?

Did they ever live in Nellies Terrace , Gillett Street in Hull?

If the answer to any of the above questions is either 'Yes' or 'maybe', please get in touch!

John Turner's "Victorian Arena - the performers" has a Mr Gibson listed as a clown at Stamford for mid-lent fair of 1804 and with Cooke's Circus at York in 1824 and with James Ryan's company at Birmingham in 1839

Hi,

Thanks for that.

My grandfather Robert (Bob) Gibson was reputedly a circus clown (and bareback rider) in his youth, and his father a ringmaster, but this was much later - in the late 1800s, early 1900s.

I actually contacted John Turner a couple of years back and he looked for any Gibsons but nothing showed up.

I am getting nearer though - I've recently found birth certificates for Gibson siblings: born in a Fairground in Bradford; born in a Feast ground in Ossett etc. The last one I found actually had my great grandfather's occupation as switchback buider!!
