Hi
Would like assistance with any records pertaining to the Turton/Turpin family. In particular William Turton b.5 Nov 1831 Manchester England. When a young man he came to Western Australia, travelling on the ship "Medina". He first settled at Chittering Brook with the intention of settling up a business as a wheelwright, a profession in which he was was well skilled. His father may of been John Turton/Turpin. William later married Mary Catherine Jones 1863 Toodyay WA.

If you are basing your info on the submitted IGI entries - you may find yourself researching the wrong family as the info appears very scant
What documentary evidence exists to support the info re: his birthdate and birthplace - other than the submitted IGI entry?
What year did he actually arrive in Australia?
Do Australian marriage certs show both parents names?
Why do you think his surname may have been Turpin rather than Turton - what surname did he marry under

Hi
Apparently William Turton used Turpin on his marriage certificate and his father as John Turpin but after that used Turton. Apparently arrived board the convict ship Clara 3 July 1857. Convicted in Liverpool ENG 1855. Received 15 years. New research says that his father John born Devon wife Hannah born Cork IRE.

There is an 1841 entry that fits the new profile above but whether it is the right one I can't say. Although the family were living in Salford in 1841 - William is shown as not born in Lancashire which is contradictory to your info that he was born in Manchester
I have a feeling that somebody is trying to make this entry "fit" without really having any proof.
1841 for Salford - only the last 2 children were born in Lancashire. This is the order in which they appear on the image and as there are 2 John's both aged 11 I suspect that Hannah & John may not have been the children of John & Hannah but perhaps relatives (niece/nephew)
John Turton 45 labourer Hannah 35 b Ireland Robert 13 John 11 William 9 Mary 4 Joseph 1 Hannah 15 born in Lancs John 11 born in Lancs HO107 Piece 585/7 Folio 19 Page 30
The 1855 trial was in Liverpool - not Manchester

Hi
Thank you for assisting me with correcting my information and adding to it. Much appreciated. What does the 1851. 1861 1871 census record? Do you have access to John and William's trial records?
Cheers Velcro

Hi,
If you want to PM me with your e-mail I have found a newspaper report - the burglaries were commited in Salford. He was also convicted of wounding a Police officer. It looks like he also had a previous conviction in 1847 at the age of 16.
Off to bed so will get back to you in the morning.
Regards, Mo

He had 2 convictions in 1847
31.5.1847 aged 15 - stealing a fixture - 2 months imprisonment and whipped
6.12.1847 - aged 16 - larceny before convicted of felony - 4 months in prison and whipped
No age given on this one and it was in Chester so not entirely sure it's the same boy but the "modus operandi" is familiar
5.1.1852 - larceny in stealing property fixed to a .......... dwelling home (can't make out the other word) - 6 months imprisonment

That 1851 entry could well be the same family as the 1841 entry - there is a death for Joseph Turton in Salford in 1847
If so - that means that there was a bit of mix up in assumed birthplaces in that it was William who was born in Devon - not his father.
What was his fathers occupation on William's marriage cert?.

Hiya,
The 1851 looks spot on for the correct address.
One of the newspaper reports in 1855 mentions that four policemen proceeded to Oldfield Road and stationed themselves near to the house that Turtons mother occupied. William Turton and another man were then arrested on leaving the house (after a bit of a struggle!).
Just thought I would keep you informed.
Regards, Mo
