I am also wondering if the reverse is true - can we access similar databases through foreign libraries.
I have (I won't tell how) access to heritage quest and New Yorks Times in USA
It would be really nice to have the same for Winnipeg, Vancouver or Sydney/NSW

It happens that I was looking at the Winnipeg Public Library system and also the Vancouver one recently, and they are not as generous as Bedfordshire. I think the Bedfordshire thing is a bit of a fluke. One of these days they will figure out how to get rid of those of us who don't live there. I doubt their licensing agreement covers us. I would encourage everyone to lobby their public libraries for more free access to online databases such as this and also ancestry library edition.

Still looking for the elusive Garfields
|
I've had access to the Times for quite a while now through Bedford Library and have found 1 good article that mentions a rellie. But can anyone tell me if there is a trick to finding BMD's/ obituaries as I've so far drawn a blank with them.
Also does anyone know if ship's passenger lists are anywhere on there? I'm looking for the SS Armidale Castle to South Africa in 1920.

Upt to now I've found only a small amount of info
Obviously you need to choose a prt of you family who might put notices in the Times Cotton Mill workers, coal miners etc are unlikely to be mentioned in Births marriages obituaries.
Do a few searches and you'll get an idea of the sections
The only success from the births, deaths and marriages is from an ancestor who was a curate, his name appears just once in marriages.
You can either try a trawl for a person, or search for (e.g.) an obituary around a particular date

I don't think there's any secret to finding the obits etc. Most people just wouldn't have warranted a notice in the Times, alas. If you're not finding them, they're probably just not there.
I only found one thing of interest during my searches, but it was a very valuable one - when somebody of interest got in trouble with the law! Through the article in question, I got the name of an additional rellie, in a family which is extremely hard to trace, so this might prove to be the critical piece of info one of these days.

Bob, Can you say which ones? There are other non-genealogy-related online indices that I am trying to find access to, and don't mind paying for, but, so far, have not found any way at all to access them. I am horrified to see that knowledge has become proprietary in the worst possible way in some fields of interest. It seems unless I'm a current student or faculty member at a university, there are many indices that I simply cannot access. It's driving me mad!
