Ay Galway
« on: Saturday 29 July 06 19:11 UTC (UK) »

Hi

From the 1861 england census I have Concannons born Ay Galway, Galway, Ireland.  Is Ay Galway a real place or an enumerators sloppyness/shorthand?

Thanks

 :)Hi
Many Concannons come from the Aran Islands in County Galway,it is possible that you Ay was originally A.I. which is sometimes used as an abbreviation for the Aran Islands Smiley

Hi Spark,
You may get some information on the head of the family if you check the Griffith Valuation tables which were produced around 1855 - 1865 for most areas of Ireland. They are a list rateable values of properties and only list the head of the family living in the property. I managed to find one of my ancestors living in Clare Galway ( 8 miles from Galway City ) this way. The tables are normally borken down into townlands within the appropriate area.
