Hi Jap,
Thanks very much. Marinella in the mother of Mario and I am puzzled by the Smoker surname. I think I will have to try and get her marriage certificate from Italy. May be just someones attempt to pronounce an Italian surname.

Hi Ros,
It might be worth downloading the certificates (particularly Mario's?) from the Vic BMD site in case what we are seeing are transcription errors in the indexing rather than errors on the actual certificates ...
Regards,
JAP

Hi Jap,
I have Mario Fornaro's death certificate. The information was given by his wife who is still alive. She was born in Russia, married in Italy and then came to Australia. The incongruities come from her trying to move from language to language. She was in Australia for only a short time when he died

Hi Ros
The surnames Smoucher and Smoker are not that different, the person giving the information may not have known all the correct information.
I note the national archives website has two references to Mario Fornaro and his arrival with his family on the 'Castel Verde'.
Do you have the information if not you can ask for it to be digitised and available online. www.naa.gov.au
Cheers Genni

Hi Genni, That's interesting about the National Archives - I did go there once a few years back when I was visiting Canberra but haven't used them as a resource.
'Castel Verde' - I seem to remember (showing my age here!) the 'Castel Felice' too. Sitmar line I think - and the first time I went to England was on Sitmar's 'Fairsky'!
Yes, Smoucher and Smoker are similar esp with ch=k pronunciation-wise. Google found Smoucha as a surname but I didn't find its origin. And I wondered - as no doubt you did - whether it might be something like Smolka or variant.
Ros, it would be interesting to hear what else you find.
Cheers,
JAP

Hi Jap and Genni,
Thanks. Yes they did arrive on the Castel Verde and I have seen it on Australian Archives and had all their full birth dates removed. There is too much identity fraud these days to allow the dates of birth of the living to be published.
I will let you know how I get on with the info from Italy.

Ros,
Interesting thought about identity fraud. I guess I would be thinking more along the lines of privacy concerns. Though many many other countries seem to have no such concerns. For example, while there are time restrictions for the Scottish records online at ScotlandsPeople, no such restrictions apply to person who can visit New Register House in Edinburgh for research - full and very detailed records are available there virtually up to the present day. An online Oz site which happily publishes dates of birth is the official WW2 Nominal Roll - there would be many of these people who are still living albeit senior citizens by now.

Hi Jap,
I believe England has recently put much stricter regulations on the purchase of certificates. The last one I purchased for a birth in 1911 I had to supply his parents names. One of the biggest scams I read yesterday in a UK paper is taking the names and dates of birth of children from gravestones and using them to open bank accounts, get credit card etc. then the debt collectors are going to the parents for payment. Lots of really nasty people out there.

At times I find the Oz privacy/identity requirements quite bizarre. To get a copy of an Uncle's death certificate - He died in 1940 - I had to provide a certified copy of my driving licence. I fail to see how anyone can use the death certificate of someone who died 65 years ago - BUT the registry now has a copy of MY driving licence which I feel could be used for fraudulent purposes.
Birth and death information is freely shown on tombstones and usually available without any ID from the holders of burial records. I find all this (and the WW1 and II information) perfectly acceptable & am very pleased it is available. I believe the requirements of the BDM registries to be quite ridiculous.
