Five Bells Pub - Folkestone
« on: Tuesday 06 September 05 08:57 BST (UK) »

On the 1871 Census of Folkestone my Great Grandfather was running a Pub called the Five Bells.

The address given on the census is 4 Canterbury road (Its preceeded by 1,2,and 3 Canterbury Road). The next address is 36 Bridge Street.

From my own knowledge of Folkestone I cannot remember a pub being in this location. The nearest I can recall is the Two Bells, which is just past the Church that sits opposite the Black Bull.

Can anyone shed any light on the Five Bells.

Thanks
Adrian

Adrian, it's the "Two Bells" though it does look as though it could read "Five" quite easily.  There are a couple of books "Tales from the Tap Room" and "More Tales from the Tap Room" that have quite a lot of info on most Folkestone pubs - you should be able to see them at the library.

Best wishes
