Birth of John Ritchie
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 05:33 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find a birth record for John Ritchie who was born in Aberdeen C1775/76. I have no record of his parents' names. He was supposed to be a coachman and ended up being sent to Australia in 1814 for having fraudelent currency but, at this stage, I am just trying to find a record of his birth (and, if I am lucky, a record of his marriage - spouse unknown). Can anyone help? Maxene

Hi Maxene

There are 5 baptisms of a John Ritchie in Aberdeenshire in the OPRs, 1774-1777; in   Pitsligo, Belhelvie, Tyrie, Auchterless and Slains.

Not sure if any of these are yours. It's probably worth trying to find more information about his conviction.  You could do a search on the NAS online catalogue:

Hello again, Gadget. I have tried to find out about his conviction - even have a date (1st December, 1813 Old Bailey) but I have not managed to find anything either by searching Old Bailey on line nor on the link you provided. I will keep trying; he did exist! Thanks, anyway, Maxene

So - he must have moved to England between his birth and conviction.
I couldn't find anything in Edinburgh, either  Undecided

Do you know that he was married or are you assuming that he was?

Also, what does it say at the trial - where/when did he have the currency and were any others involved?

I know that he married (legally?) and had a son John in C1810, he married Mary Lyons (who was a widow from Middlesex/London and who had 2 children from a previous marriage) in C1810-1813; Mary followed John to Australia with her son William and John jnr (but it is not clear whether Mary was the mother or step mother of John- although the generally held belief is that she was a step mother). He was sentenced to 14 years transportation for possessing forged currency and was sent to Australia on "Somersetshire" in 1814.I am presuming he was in the London area when convicted.
His death cert (completed by wife 4 or 5) just states Aberdeen, Scotland as place of birth and no name for parents - she probably wouldn't have known the names. That is all I have been able to glean. Thanks, Gadget. Maxene

Do you know if John Ritchie, junior, was born in England or Scotland?

There are 13 showing on the IGI (extracted) 1808-1812 but all in Scotland. It might be worth following this John up if you've not done so.

Also, what religion were they?

Added - if his first son was called John, it might indicate that his father was also John - the Tyrie (1776) and the Auchterless (1776) Johns both had a John as a father.

He was buried from a Presbyterian church, but I am not certain that he WAS Presbyterian. I am guessing that his father was also John Ritchie and I am also guessing that John jnr was born in England. I have considered trying to go down the path of chasing John junior, but as I do not know his mother's name for certain, I am grasping at straws. My thought process was that if I could access the court documents, I might gain additional information to assist me in my search. The younger John disappeared off the face of the earth after his father's death in 1860. I am still trying to find a record of his death in Australian records. Thanks for your suggestions and advice.
