Can anyone tell me did the Irish coming to England in the 1930's have to register anywhere or did they have to have passports or some sort of permission to settle here.
I'm pretty sure they didn't. My parents came to England from Ireland in 1933 to settle and they certainly never had passports. Movement to England from Ireland did not need any permission. I suppose it stemmed from the fact that Ireland was part of the UK until 1922, and thereafter a sort of 'special relationship' regarding travel prevailed.
