Bearman & Hawkes, Witham and surrounds
« on: Tuesday 06 September 05 17:38 BST (UK) »

Hi - my ancestors, Dorcas Bearman (b. 1795) and Samuel Hawkes (b. 1794) married in Witham in 1814.  They lived in Faulkborne and had several children there, eventually moving to White Notley where Dorcas died in 1837.

I've searched the Witham, Faulkborne, and White Notley parish registers for Dorcas Bearman's birth with no success.  Any other Bearman researchers out there who might be able to give me some ideas?  Many many thanks!!

Hi Seashell,
I am a rootschat member who is desperately seeking Bearman's.  Have you posted your surname interests on the Surname Interests Table SIT yet?  I am so far the only lonely one looking for Bearman's.  I saw your post becasue I have a "google alert" on the name Bearman.

If when you look into your Dorcas, you come across a William probably born within a few years of her.  Please get in touch.  I am looking for William Bearman, probable occupation shoemaker, c 1790's Essex.  His son William Bearman was born Barking in 1812 and is my ancestor.

Will keep my eyes open for William Bearman, Siouxsie - so far haven't come across him.

And no, I haven't posted my surname interests yet - still pretty new at this.  Thanks for the heads up on that.

Hi Siouxsie -
Have been researching the Bocking St. Mary Parish Registers, and came across two William Beerman's for you.
1) William, son of Abraham and Elizabeth Beerman, born 3 Oct. 1772, baptized 15 April 1775 ( along with sister Susannah born 15 Dec. 1773.)
2) William, son of Jeremiah and Mary Beerman, born 18 June 1762,  baptized 19 June (I think - it was hard to read)
1762.

Those were the only two Williams I saw in the Bocking St. Mary p.r.'s - although it was hard to read sometimes!

Do you think either of these might be yours?  Unfortunately it didn't give any other information.

Hope it helps.........................

Siouxsie are you sure he was born in 1812?  I did find a birth for a William Beerman who was born in 1808.  (I didn't write it down but I'll look it up again if you think he might be yours.)

Hi Debbie

Thanks for all your input here, I really appreciate it, as I had come to a bit of a dead end with my Bearmans. 1808 sure sounds near enough, can you really trust the ages they give on the census.

The evidence I have on my William is this:

1842 on his marriage cert he is "of full age" and a "shoemaker" Stoke Damarel Devon his father is William his occupation is shoemaker too
on the 1851 census in Taunton Somerset his age is 39 and he is a Royal Marines Private birthplace Essex
On the 1861 census in Greenwich he is 49 and a "sick attendant" at the Royal Hospital in Greenwich birthplace Barking Essex

Barking being similar in sound and spelling to Bocking, I thought maybe he could be Bocking, but equally he could be Barking.

Havn't found him in 1871, which could give more info, perhaps he has died by then.  His youngest son Frederick William is a pupil at the Greenwich Hospital School and Infirmary age 11 in 1871, but no trace of Mum and Dad or other siblings.

Hi Siouxsie, William Bearman son of Samuel and Sarah born 1808 in Bocking.  Does this sound like it could be him?  If so let me know, I will only have access to these records for one more day.

Hi Debbie
If it would be no trouble, could you get the details for me.   1808 is a possibility for my William's birthyear

Hi Siouxsie -

Here you go:

Samuel Bearman, bachelor of this parish, and Sarah Clark, spinster of the same, were married in this church (Bocking St. Mary) by banns this (22nd or 27th - couldn't tell!) day of August 1799 by Richard White, curate.  Samuel & Sarah each signed with a mark.  Witnesses were Henry Gentry and Sarah Bearman.
Children:
John, born 9 May baptized 15 May 1801
Mary born 30 Apr baptized 26 Dec 1803
Sarah born 25(?) Feb baptized 18 (?) June 1806
WILLIAM born 31 Oct 1808, baptized 11 Mar 1809
Hannah born 13 May baptized 24 Nov 1811

There may have been others - the film was a little difficult to read.  But I tried to look carefully and those were all I saw.
By the way I checked on a map and Barking is nowhere near Bocking - if that means anything!

Good luck - hope it helps!
