herbert battrick/batterick
« on: Friday 25 November 05 20:12 GMT (UK) »

Trying to trace the parentage of herbert born around 1822 in Mapperton. can anyone find him in 1841/51/61/71 - I have him married in 1881 and living in the albert St Barracks in Blandford.
Thank you
Caroline

Looking at the 1881 image, although Herberts age could be 59 I wonder is it 39.

The 1881 shows a Mark Battrick aged 32 also born Mapperton and who has a son Herbert.

The 1851 has the following family - spelling is Batterick.  All born ALMER in Dorset unless shown otherwise.  census area was ALMER

Ann Batterick 38 b Lytchett Matravers Dorset wife
George Batterick abt 15  Son
Hannah Batterick 6 Daughter
Herbert Batterick 9 Son
Jane Batterick 18 Daughter
John Batterick 40 Head
Mark Batterick 2 Son
Phoebe Batterick 13 Daughter

If I have the right family, Herbert must have been 39 in 1881 as his father was only born 1811 so could not have had a child in 1822

Per freebmd

BATTRICK, Herbert Births Quarter June 1841 Blandford
Dorset Volume: 8 Page: 2[7_]  (there is a query which means the page number is unclear on the microfilm)

Per the Vital Records Index

BATTRICK, Herbert George   Christening
   Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   20 Feb 1876   Recorded in:   Sturminster Marshall, Dorset, England
   Father:   Herbert BATTRICK
   Mother:   Dorcas

Battrick, Mark / Mary Jane Marsh
Marriages Quarter: December 1869  Blandford  Dorset
Volume: 5a Page: 555

I can't find Herbert on the 1861 or 1871 but looking at his wife's birthplace and that of his first 2 children, I suspect he was already in Newfoundland and only returned after the 1871 census

Hi Caroline
I've done an 1841 search - no Battrick/Batterick in Maperton, no Herbert Batterick anywhere in Dorset, one Hubert Battrick with same family as found in 1851.
Cheers Jan Wink

Hi

Dorcas is widowed on the 1891.  In her reply, Jan shows a HUBERT with the same family I found on the 1851 - except he was shown as Herbert.  There is a death on freebmd for a Hubert Battrick aged 40 March qtr 1882 Blandford 5A 180

Hi
The 1841 census was taken on June 7th 1841 so Hubert age 1 month fits with the Herbert born June qtr 1841 that Carole found. This looks like your man assuming the 1881 census has been mistranscribed making Herbert 20 years older, which looks a good bet given the age at death. Would this younger age fit with anything else you know about this man?
Best wishes Jan Wink
