Please can someone help me to get moving with Mary Newton?
I have worked out that she was born around 1842. I have the census details from 1851 onwards which indicate that she was born in either Shildon or Chapel Row.
Her parents were William Newton and Dorothy Wandlass. She had brothers Robert and Luke and a sister Ann (all older than her).
I can't find a birth certificate for her, although there are Mary Newtons born either side of 1842 (but I don't know enough to hazard a guess which one is her).
According to my great Aunt Doris's diaries, Mary's father was a "fine Quaker" and they lived mostly at a place called Eldon Bank. The censuses all give their address as Adelaide's Colliery.
I have found her marriage certificate in 1874 - but it gives me no further info to help me work backwards.
Mary is bugging me now. How can I find anything else out about her? Did Quakers have baptisms?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Don't quite understand what more inform you want. You have parents and place of birth and she is at home on 1861. Copy of birth cert? Did you find those births on 1837 online??
Shildon was in the Durham Western Registration District.
Durham County Council website has only one Mary Newton birth on their index in Durham Western and that was in 1841. Other entries for Mary's have second names.
You can apply to Durham for a certificate naming one or both parents and if the details match they will issue a Certificate - if the details don't match you get your payment back. I believe an application form is available from the site.

I had found several Mary Newton entries on 1837online but didn't know which one to go for, so haven't got a birth crtificate for her. The info about the Durham site is, therefore, very useful as I didn't want to waste my money (which can happen with 1837).
Thanks.
