Elizabeth Bennett was tried at the Devon assizes, Exeter, County Devonshire. At the time of the conviction she was a resident of Stoke Dameral. "In her trial of 20 March 1809 at Exeter Assizes, the indictment alleged that she and an accomplice, Mary Anstice, both late of Stoke Dameral ( a part of Plymouth) had on 12 October 1808 committed Grand Larceny by stealing goods in that Parish from a William How.'' These were "one copper kettle of the value of four shillings , one waiter of the value of one shilling (a salver or tray on which food was placed to be served), 3 blankets of the value of six shillings, one umbrella of the value of five shillings, 12 knives of the value of four shillings, 12 forks of the value of four shillings and one tea caddy of the value of four shillings."
My question is anypne researching Mary Anstice or William How? I wonder what happened to them?
All turned out well for Elizabeth who ended up quite well off and in possession of her own farm something that never could have happened in England.
