I am looking for any individuals with the surname GAUNT in Alton in 41 and 51 census' and in Ipstones in 61 and 71 census'.

41 AND 51 William Gaunt b. c 1789 Alton, poss. farmer, Alton

61 and 71 William Gaunt b. 1828 Alton occ. policeman, Ipstones

Hi Tom

I think I have found your William Gaunt in the 1841 Staffordshire census.

Near Highfields, Alton, Staffordshire
HO107/1006/1

William Gaunt - Aged 50 - Farmer
Hannah Gaunt - Aged 50 (Not born in Staffs)
Joseph Gaunt - Aged 20

The following four people were also living in the same house. I think they are still the family of Gaunt's, but not 100% sure as the census is very faded.

Mary Gaunt? - Aged 14
William Gaunt? - Aged 10
Emma Gaunt? - Aged 8
James Gaunt? - Aged 4

I will have a look in 1861 for you.

I have also found the William Gaunt in the 1861 Census

William Gaunt - Head - 33 - Sargent of Police - Born Alton
Ann Gaunt - Wife - 26 - Born ??
William Gaunt - Son - 4 - Scholar - Born Burslem?
George Gaunt - Son - 2 - Born Ipstones
James Gaunt - Son - 2 Mths - Born Ipstones

Also, incase you are interested, the Joseph Gaunt that was found in the 1841 census may have also been located in the 1861 census

Joseph Gaunt - Head - 41 - Farmer - Born Denston?
Ellen Gaunt - Wife - 59 (or 39) - Born Denston?

William Gaunt b. 1828 my G G Grandfather especially confirmation of his role in the police [the 81 cen has him as a police pensioner], and Joseph his brother, and William born 1789 my G G G Grandfather

Marriage number 460 20.1.1812, Thomas, Batchelor to Elizabeth (x) Elkes, Spinster both of Alton Parish. Vicar Thomas Bl;ackey, Witnessed by John Burton and Frances (x) Burton.

These are all mine.
The family seems to have been around Alton from about c1775 to c1865. My direct line migrated to Burslem c1857, Ipstones c 1863, Leek c 1880, Manchester c 1900.
There are some Alton Gaunts who I have not found a link to yet. Before Alton they were in Rocester from c 1545
