Have been right through Hertford 1851 but couldn't see a Joseph Hills.
Do you have any clues as to where they might be in Hertford - where the children were christened for example?

St.Johns and All Saints are separated in the census - I've been right through them again but no joy.  Various other Hills - John 60, charles 36, James, 54, John 44, George 44 and a Joseph 20 who was a visitor with the Chambers family.
You say the children were scattered by 1861 - maybe the parents were already dead by 1851.  Where were the children in '61 - I'll check to see if they were already there in '51.

1861 RG9/823 folio 96 page 6 Hertford St John
29 Ware Road,Hertford
Thomas Gear      28        head       b.Hertford
Emma               30        wife         b.Standon
Charles Hills       19        wifes brother        b.Hertford
Ann Hills            14        wifes sister                   "
Just checked BMD Joseph died 1852 and Hannah died 1858 BUT BOTH DEATHS ARE RECORDED IN WARE.This seems strange as everything else points to Hertford. As I said earlier they do not appear on Hertford 1841 but that is when their children were being christianed at St John's.Thanks for your time,Pete Cool

Ware Road is in the St.Johns area but they're not there in '51.   Don't think the 10 year age difference would make any difference as I haven't found any Josephs.  However, have now looked at Standon (as expected no joy but it's smaller than Ware to search).  Have done some of Ware and found
107/1705  Folios 397-411  Page 1  Hole Farm, Ware
Joseph Hills, hd, 73, Pauper Ag.Lab, b.Thundridge, Herts
Hannah, wife, 63, b.Stanstead, Herts
(too old - and doubtful parents of Joseph given Hannah's age)
107/1705 Folios 297-316  Page 1.  High St., Ware
Emma Hills, Unm, 20,  House srvant, b.Standon
(living with Joseph Grapes (tailor) and family)

It's a start!  I'll go through the rest of Ware later - I know it doesn't find Joseph/Hannah but maybe we'll come up with a clue somewhere)

Have checked and double checked all Joseph Hills born at that time who married a Hannah and the couple that appear in the 1851 age 73 and 63 are the only ones that fit the criteria.I realise this means that Hannah would have been in her late fifties when she had her last child but this is not impossible(my gg grandparents were still having children well into their fifties). Thanks for all your help and time,Pete Cool
