Stark
« on: Friday 09 September 05 17:26 BST (UK) »

I am direct descenant of a James Stark, b abt 1823 in Fife.  He married a Margaret, b 1835 in Fife.

He was a Merchant Seaman, and eventually settled in North Shields/Tynemouth, Northumberland

They had a number of children, born between 1849 and 1870

Any leads appreciated.

Hi Al, do you know Margaret's surname? Or a more town connected with James Stark? To make a lookup easier?

Have you seen the 1881 Census record on "Familysearch.Org" for James Stark b 1823/Salior and Margaret in Tynemouth.  It lists 3 children, James/14/b North Sheilds/Errand Boy, Andrew/12/Scholar/b North Sheilds and Margaret.A.Stark/7/Scholar/b North Sheilds

Thanks.

I've not seen the record, but the information ties in exactly with the family names and dates of birth.

I was born in North Shields, but only started on this game a few weeks ago.  It's addictive.

I believe James wife may have been Margaret Fleming, but am unsure.

Thanks again

Hi Alan,

It would probably be a good idea to read the various topics at the top of the general boards on 'Scotland' and on 'Beginners' to get some ideas on sources and how to proceed.  Another useful reference is Roy Stockdill's 'Newbies Guide' on GENUKI at:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html

The 1881 census for England & Wales is available online free of charge on FamilySearch at:
http://www.familysearch.org

The record (have a look at it yourself) lists:
66 Stephenson St, Tynemouth, Northumberland
James STARK, Head, Married, 58, born Scotland, Sailor
Margaret STARK, Wife, 46, born Scotland
James STARK, Son, 14, Errand Boy, born North Shields
Andrew STARK, Son, 12, Scholar, born North Shields
Margaret A STARK, Daughter, 7, born North Shields

On the FamilySearch site in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) there is a possible marriage for James in Fife:
James STARK m Margaret Ann FLEMING
Two entries (probably Banns being proclaimed in both the bride's parish and the groom's parish).
9 Oct 1847, St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife
9 Oct 1847, Cupar, Fife
Unfortunately, this is before statutory registration in Scotland (it was introduced in 1855).

Probably your best idea is to purchase the birth certificate of one of the children in order to make sure of Margaret's maiden surname.
James's birth is possibly the one on FreeBMD at:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
as follows:
James STARK, birth, Dec qtr 1866, Tynemouth, Vol 10b, Page 160
Andrew's birth doesn't seem to be on FreeBMD (it is not complete) but Margaret Ann is possibly:
Margaret Ann STARK, birth, Sep qtr 1873, Tynemouth, Vol 10b, Page 181

Good luck,

JAP

Dear JAP

It certainly gives some alternative lines of pursuit.

The information on this branch of Stark after their arrival in North Shields is prety much complete, however I'm not certain whether the James who married Margaret Fleming might not have been have been the James born in 1826 in Fife who settled in Willington Quay.

Thanks very much for your advice.

A little further update on my search -- and future lines of enquiry.

My branch of the Stark's seems to come from Kinghorn -- John Stark, b jun 1794, m Jean Scott, were parents of James b 1821 who later settled on Tyneside.  The male line were predominantly fishermen / sailors.

John's parents were James Stark and Ann or Agnes Moyes, both from south east fife between Kirkaldy and Burntisland.

Any further insights appreciated.
