McCarthy Family
« on: Friday 09 September 05 21:02 UTC (UK) »

Good Evening! Smiley

First I should apologise for the distinct lack of information that I have regarding the McCARTHY family for whom I'm searching.

I have information from a 1902 English Marriage certificate of a Patrick Gerald Eugene McCarthy born 1874 in Ireland. His father is shown as Patrick McCarthy (deceased) also from Ireland.

It is understood that P G E McCarthy was one of a family of 12/13 children, possibly from County Wicklow. In the 1901 English Census and on his wedding certificate he is shown as an 'Explosion Worker', but there is no certainty that this would give any hint to possible similar types of ocupation of either himself or his father.

He doesn't appear in the English census for 1891, so presumably he was still in Ireland sometime between 1891 and 1901.

Any possible hints would be much appreciated, and I thank you in anticipation.

Kind Regards - Dave

Dave:

From Vital Records Index:
If you have any info on siblings,  it might help narrow your search.

MCCARTHY, Patrick   Bir   1874   Irel   Clar
Fa:   Patrick McCarthy
Mo:   Mary Connell
MCCARTHY, Patrick   Bir   1874   Irel   Cork
Fa:   Patrick McCarthy
Mo:   Bridget Begley
MCCARTHY, Patrick   Bir   1874   Irel   Cork
Fa:   Patrick MCCARTHY
Mo:   Ellen WHITE

Cork had some copper mines which could explain the trade young patrick had. See link  http://www.rootsweb.com/~irish/igsi_published/berehave/allintro.htm
There were some mines in Clare but there were also quarries.

Hope this helps some.

Good luck,

Pat

Hello Pat

Many thanks for your time and effort in finding these possibilities for me. Looks as though I should try other counties as well.

Unfortunately I have posted all I know about the family, and the information, other than that which was on the certificates, was from my mother in law aged 88 who I'm asking to recall siblings of her Grandfather (and she herself is English). Wicklow was never a certainty but a vague recollection.

The url was helpful, in as much as it actually mentions explosives and I would expect quarries to employ explosives also.

This is further than I've managed to reach before, so many thanks again Pat.

Hi Dave !
I realise McCarthy is a good Irish name - and there's plenty of them around
but there's somebody looking for a Patrick in Waterford ( well it starts with a "W"  ) - but the father was Owen .... just a thought - you never know!!!!

Hi Annie

Many thanks for the thought - I'll grasp at anything at the moment. Sad There is nothing definite about Wicklow, so I could well 'tour' the counties with this one.

One of the problems is that an Irish Patrick McCarthy is nearly as rare as the English John Smith! Angry

I'll take a look at the link you suggested.
