Hello everyone! Here's one for you to mull over before you go to bed tonight!!
I'm trying to find a Susannah Stanworth who married my 3 x Gt GF John Whittaker in 1854 at St Peter's, Burnley. I know from the M Cert that her father was William Stanworth, a slater by profession.
Trawling through the IGI (FamilySearch.org), I've come across the following:
Susanna Stanworth born 16 Jun 1828 baptised 24 Jun 1837 at Wesley Chapel, Church Street, Colne - father William Stanworth mother Elizth.
Was it common way-back-then to baptise children so many years after they were born?? And the strange thing is that I've found another entry, which could be Susanna's sister:
Jane Stanworth born 26 Aug 1826 baptised 24 Jul 1837 again at Wesley Chapel - same parents. This baptism was a month after Susanna's - why not do both baptisms at the same time?
I wonder if anyone will ever know?!?! Any "baptism" specialists out there?!
My guess is that one of the entries on the IGI is a typo and the baptisms were on the same date. I will have a look at the original entries when I go to the library and let you know. it should also give the fathers occupation and where he was living. I too have family baptised in the same Chapel and in some cases they were baptised on the same day. Mine came from around Roughlee , so I reckon they waited and then trotted over to Colne when they could. I also have one that was baptised when he was eight years old so it`s perhaps not that unusual.
I will be in touch,
Mo
