COMPLETED: Sheffield parish records - Marriage 1841 - ROBERTS
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 00:39 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find the marriage of Edwin Roberts, my ggggrandfather, to Ann. BMD has an entry for Q1 1841 where from a selection of 8 names on the page there is Ann Eaton so she may be a possibility. Before I invest in a certificate would someone be able to look in the parish registers to see whether I am on the right track.

Thanks

Ian

Hi Tuppie

Thanks very much for the details. Time to visit the records office to order the certificate I think and to check the 1841 census details for the family. I have a folio reference courtesy of http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org

Are you a member there as well - if not there is an imposter on that site as the records show a Tuppie visited earlier today.

Hi Ian.

Yes I am one of the transcribers of the 1841 census, and also post replies from the resources I have for Sheffield.

If you are ordering the certificate, you should be able to get a copy of the original with their signatures from Sheffield Register office, it shouldn't take too long as you have the exact date and page number. Make sure you ask for a photocopy.

The 1841 reference for this family is 1335/9 folio 46a Port Mahon Sheffield.
Thomas EATON aged 70
Lydia EATON aged 55
Hannah EATON aged 25
Ruth EATON aged 20 Drapemaker

Edwin ROBERTS aged 25 Pen knife cutler
Ann ROBERTS aged 25
Ann ROBERTS aged 8
George ROBERTS aged 4. all born in county.

It's not very clear on the census if they are all in one household or living next door.
Does this mean they had the children before they were married, as no relationships  are givenin 1841 the 1851 census should answer this.

There is also a marriage on the IGI for Thomas EATON and Lydia WOODWARD 4th March 1810.
Regards

Hi Tuppie

Thanks for the extra details you have added this morning - I had picked up the IGI details for Thomas and Lydia and was going to check the census details this evening as I work quite close to the Family Record Office.

I was interested in what you said about getting the certificate from Sheffield Register office. In the past I have done this by using the GRO either online or through visiting the FRO - would the document I get from Sheffield be any different to what I would get using my normal route?

Ian

PS I don't think the 51 census will help me as by then Edwin and Ann had emigrated to Finland where they had 3 more children including my direct ancestor Albert Roberts in 1845.  By 1861 (when the Finland connection is given) the family had returned to Sheffield but Edwin was dead and there is no mention of Ann Jr and George so I was unaware of their existence. Quite an unusual family for the mid 19th century!

"A marriage certificate is retained by the married couple and two registers are completed at Church of England weddings. One register of the marriage entries is kept by the church. When the other register has been filled with entries it is sent by the officiating minister to the superintendent registrar of the registration district in which the church is situated. Also every three months the minister must also prepare a further copy, from his register of any entries of marriage taking place during the last quarter and send that copy to the Register General." from Ancestral Trails by Mark D Herber.

It is from this copy that GRO certificates are copied.

However the original is deposited with the local register office, so if you request a photocopy of the certificate from them, this also includes your ancestors signatures in their own hand. (If they were able to sign) which in your case they did.

Hope this helps
