Hi, does anyone live within striking distance of Somerleyton, who could check out a grave in the churchyard for me? I know it's there, I have obtained a photo of it, but I can't read the full inscription because of the grass in the way......  Huh

If anyone can help, post a message or send me a PM and I'll post the photo.

Lots of thanks, Veron

Thanks Wendy, here's the picture. The full name of my ancestor is Joseph Muncaster.  Any of the rest of the inscription which you can read would be very much appreciated.  I think the year of death ought to be 1888 but have not much clue about what the rest of it might say.  His wife Margaret is also buried in the churchyard but I know what hers says!

Many thanks again, Veron  Cheesy

Hi Headbanger

I have rellies buried at Somerleyton but I am too far away to get there.

However I do have some burial records for Somerleyton St Marys and hope this may help.
March 16th 1882 Margaret Muncarster aged 57 years.
Nov 1st 1888 Joseph Muncarster aged 66 years.

Regards Linda

Thanks Linda, that's very useful. As you can see from the photo, the actual date of death looks like October twenty-something, so Nov 1st for the burial would fit perfectly. Margaret died on "12th March 1882 in her 58th year" so that fits too. Wendy who replied earlier has been to the churchyard, but is waiting for the vicar to get back to her with a plan because it was very overgrown. I live in hopes of actually finding out what the middle bit of the inscription says sometime!

The ironic thing is, my parents, who were very interested in the family history, lived in South Norfolk until they went into a care home, and would definitely have visited these graves had they known they were there - but they didn't. I have also been in the area plenty of times while they lived there and never knew either!  Undecided

That's the way it goes!

Thanks anyway - Veron
