Does anyone on this this visit the Brighton Library? if so, please could I ask a real big favor to look up an Obituary. William Robert RICHARDSON died 29 July 1955, he was a BMD registrar for Hove and Steyning areas when I last found him in the trade directories. I am hoping for a real good write up as his probate was extremly interesting but I obviously have gaps in his life and hope this will fill a few in.
Many thanks in advance
Cullen

Hi Cullen
I'm going down to the library today hopefully, so I'll see if I can find anything on microfilm.

Sorry Kay
I had a look through the Argus for 2-3 weeks after that date, the Brighton Gazette for the same and the Brighton and Hove Herald for the end of July and all of August, but nothing. I didn't see any mention of him at all, and as far as I could see there was nothing even remotely like an obituary in these issues for anyone, and the only real detailed mentions of deaths were in court reports about crime.

kizmaiz,
Many many thanks for trying so many papers. I must admit I am surprised as he seems to have led a very adventurous life, and held a fairly important position in the community. Perhaps it was something the papers were not interested in doing. Your help was much appreciated.

I'm interested to know if they used to put suicides in the papers? My Great Gran killed herself in Brighton.

As I recall, there were lots of reports in the Argus of suicides, or definitely reports of attempted suicides, some of them quite long rambling reports. Apparently it was a serious crime at the time.
What sort of time period are you looking at? I have a few days off next week and will probably be popping in to the Local History Centre at some point. I can have a look to see if there is anything listed

Hi,
My Great Gran was Ann Goble nee Felsted. She lived at 36, Richmond Rd Brighton and slit her throat on Fri 8th July 1910. Her husband was Cornelius Edward Goble.
I'd be really grateful for any help you can give. It's macabre but I feel so sad for Ann, my Grandad was only 5.Do you know what happened to suicides? Did they get buried?
Very best wishes
Brigcs

I'll have a look out for that when I'm there.
These sorts of things make you realise that the stresses and strains of life are nothing new and that some poor people reached the depths of despair in the past as well as today.
I'm not exactly sure what happened to suicides at that time, but I'm sure someone on Rootschat will know. Why not post a general enquiry, no need for specifics, on the Common Room asking what was the protocol in the pre WW1 era regarding suicide?
Hope to find some info for you
Glen

Thanks
I'm newish to Rootschat so sometimes I'm not sure where to post. I think life must've been really hard, in her suicide note an mentions a "terrible Thursday" and how she dare not think about her boys, Great Granddad was painting up at the station at the time. Bet that kept him busy!
Best wishes and again thanks

Hi Brigcs
The newspapers are on micro film, it's probably best if you can to ring and book a machine although they're not as popular as microfiche so may well be lucky if you just turn up. If you speak to the people who work there they will show you where the films are and how to use the machine. They're really helpful. Good luck and enjoy Westlife! Suziq

Thanks Suziq,
I'll take your advise and phone up to book. I know the dates so it shouldn't be too difficult. I'd better think of what else I can investigate while I'm there.

Hi Brigcs
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I've been snowed under writing up three family trees, and every spare moment has been spent pouring over census images, death certs etc
Anyway, if you do get down to the Family history centre and can get a microfilm viewer (it may mean popping in early and being lucky or booking one for later that day), then look on the Brighton Argus film which includes Saturday the 10th July 1910. Page 2 has quite a detailed article (much too detailed for todays readers) about your great-grandmothers suicide. It will probably not give you any more info than you already have, but it is interesting that it also includes the entire suicide note, something that would be inconceivable in a modern newspaper. But equally amazing is the fact that the incident happened one day, and by the time the presses rolled the next day, the inquest had been completed and reported.
I have a printout of it, and I can send it to you when (if?) I can get my scanner installed. The cost of printing at the Family history centre has risen alarmingly in the last few weeks (80p per page of A4. Shocking). PM me and I'll try to scan it and send it asap.
Regards
Glen

Hi Glen,
How do I pm you? am I being thick!!! I should be preparing GCSE oral exams and what am I up to!!!
I'd love a copy. Poor Great Gran Ann fancy even having your troubles all printed in the paper! I have the inquest etc and was so surprised that it was all done and dusted so quickly. If I remember rightly it was the end of the week too! To me it left no element of doubt that it was suicide and not murder! When you read what she did to herself it makes you wonder. Iwent to the SOG fair in London last week and bought a good book on the changing roles of women in the 20th century which I will read after the exams. Heaven knows what life was like for women then. By the way does the article mention burial?
Both sides of my Mum's family come from Brighton, Mum was born in Lancing. I spent a lot of my childhood there. For some strange reason I feel happy when I arrive it is just so odd wandering round streets that you know your relatives walked all those years ago. I must get up to Richmond Road to see where Ann lived.
Suziq if you are reading this I have Farrants in my tree too. Naomi who married Joshua Farnes.
Better get down to work.
Many thanks Glen for all your help.
Best wishes
Brigitte
