Hello all, is there a surname index for the 1851 census in Aberdeen. I have lost a family NELSON and am hoping to track my ancestor John Lumsden NELSON (B. 1833 Canongate, Edinburgh - d.15 Feb 1891 Aberdeen) and his mother Elizabeth NELSON nee LUMSDEN/LUMSDALE.
On the 1841 census Canongate-enumeration district 33 page 11 33 New Street Elisabeth NELSON F 35 Hawker born outside county Robert NELSON M 10 born Midlothian John NELSON M 8 born Midlothian Helen NELSON M 5 born Midlothian Agnes MUIR Combmaker F 20 born Midlothian
On 1851 census, there is no record of the family anywhere in Edinburgh. John's father Robert NELSON (d. 1839) was also a combmaker so I guess they came to work in Aberdeen at the comb factory.
In the 1861 census, John and his wife, Jane/Jean DOW and kids were living at 19 Harriet St Aberdeen with their father in law James DOW. In the 1871 census, he and his second wife, Mary MILNE, were living at 1 Spital, Old machar parish in Aberdeen. In the 1881 census, he and his second wife were living at 100 Green, Aberdeen St. Nicholas, with her son from her first marriage, William Murray, a shopkeeper.
Elizabeth NELSON was recorded still alive (well, not dead) in 1866 (at the time of her son's second marriage). Her last name appears on several records (marriage, baptism of elder son) as Lumsdale or Lumisdale.
On her wedding entry, she is recorded as living at 21 New Street, daughter of John LUMSDALE Weaver in Sander(s) - I have a few leads but finding Elizabeth later to determine a parish of birth would be of immense help!
