Hi Chaddie.
Was your Grandfather or his family from Devon? You didn't say, was all.
Do you have a DOB or POB for him?

Ryan.

hi ryan,
my grandad lived in devon in his later life,i have his army and r.a.f. papers, they say he was born in middlesex.i have sent off for his birth cert, his d.o.b 26th feb 1897.whether or not he went to live in devon after his birth i have no idea.i did find a devon address in his army records,it was garlic rea, quarrystone cottage, brixham, devon.
im having so much difficulty trying to trace my grandad before 1911(he joined the army in 1911 aged 14),so i have no idea of his mothers name or siblings.his dad is down as also being called george thorne on his marriage certificates.
kindest regards

Hi Debbie.
Thanks for replying.

I'm guessing you've tried the 1901 census for him. Any luck there?

I'm familiar with Garlic Rea. I recognize the name from when I last visited Brixham. You can find a map showing it by typing the keyword "garlic" at: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ Much of Brixham's older structures in the town centre remain. Quarrystone Cottage may very well still exist.

Please get back to me with the info from George's birth certificate. The more updates w/ new info you make to this thread will allow you to receive more attention, which will hopefully lead to more help!

Ryan.

hi ryan,
i rang camden registry office today,as i hadnt recieved my grandads birth cert and i applied for it 5 wks ago.they cant find him,so they gave me the number for the family records office.i have now applied to the family records office, and have to wait 15 days.they say if my grandad was born in england they will find him, lets hope !!!
on my dads half sisters birth cert it says they lived at 31 garlic rea,so they must have lived there in may 1925,when joyce was born, thinking this may be the cottage on grandads army papers.
i havent been on 1901 census as of yet,but hoping to have a go one day,ive not been at this for long.
thanks for all your help,i really do appreciate it.
take care

Hiya Debbie.
That's very unfortunate news to receive. I sincerely hope that the Dartford Workhouse records can shed some light on your Granddad.

I'm very good, thank you. Hope you're not discouraged by any of this  Smiley

Best wishes.

Ryan.

hi ryan,
i got the papers back from dartford today about the workhouse.it says my great grandad was unable to care for them(no mention of their mum sadly)and they lived in northumberland heath when they were taken into care.george and joseph were taken in on the 26th feb 1901,and we thought that 26th feb was my grandads birth date, but it says april 1897.confusing.it also says if it was my grandad (which im thinking it is,as rebecca sims is on here as him being boarded out to her, same details as army papers),that he had a sister called maria, who was born in june quarter in woolwich.joseph was also born there, but they have no place of birth for george.i have applied for joseph and maria,s birth certs today in the hope if it is my grandads family and their father was in the army it may have his army no on them and i can apply for his army records to trace my grandad.it says joseph was transformed to the infirmary on 5th may 1901(what for it doesnt say).all 3 of them survived the workhouse as there is nothing on the papers anywhere to say they died, which is good but now i have a little more hunting to do.
hope you are well.
take care
