Hiya Eve,

According to Griffiths Valuation of Sligo, 1858 Wynne was quite a popular name in the county. The surname is listed about 80 times although some names may be a repetition of a person owning more than one property.

Best Wishes, Chris

Hi Chris,

Do you have access to the 1858 Griffith's valuation?  If so, I am looking for a James Wynne, my 3rd greatgrandfather, who did not come to America but remained behind.  He may have already passed away.

TIA,

I don't know whether this has any bearing on Eve's Wm Wynne, but I've been trying to track down my ggf's parents for ages. I'd always been told they were from Wales, but now Ireland seems more likely.
James Wynn was born in Manchester in 1854. His f appears as Wm on his marriage cert -a gardener. On what appears to be his birth cert, his f is described as a hawker, & his m is Ann nee Craton, which seems to tie in with a marriage in (St Mary's RC?) Manchester in 1853. I think this family is the same as the 1871 census entry for Geo Leigh St, Manchester, which has Ann Wynn 47, char-woman b Ireland, with sons Jas 17 & John 15 (factory operatives) also Wm 12 & Mary 9 (scholars). But I just can't be sure that all these connect. There are other James Wynn / Wynnes b in Mancr about the same time. Mine was an illiterate joiner at the time of his marriage in Sheffield (1878), but later he became a grocer, & I wonder if his very respectable wife taught him to read.
Any ideas?
