Annie Gardner b Benfieldside c 1860
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 22:14 BST (UK) »

Annie Gardner was born c 1860 in Benfieldside.
She married Thomas Bell in 1883.
I have not had any success in finding her birth, baptism or parents.

Help please!

Thanks a lot

Hi Andy

Do you have Annie's father's name and profession from her marriage certificate ?

Do you have any Census entries for Annie ?

Regards

Hi Helen

I sent off for a copy of the marriage certificate this morning.
I have bought quite a few lately and was trying to avoid it but I caved in in frustration!
I can't find any trace of her in the census returns for 1861 or 71 other than a very strange entry. This is for Iveston where there is an Ann Gardner age 2.
So far so good but the family are-
John Todd - Head  Age 60
Ann Todd - Wife Age 55
Ann Gardner - Daughter age 2
John Todd - Son age 6
John Gardner - Grandson age 1

On looking at the original I think that there may be an error and this Ann may be in her 20s. There is a thick score mark running down the column with her name in.

Hopefully the certificate will help.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Andy

As you suspected the Iveston entry for 1861 isn't yours. That Ann Gardner is married, aged 21 and was born Whitley, Northumberland.

Do you have 1901 and 1891 Census entries for Thomas and Ann Bell ?

If not let me have what you know and I'll see what I can do.

Hi helen

Thanks for the offer. I already have this information which I have taken her age and birthplace from.
I just can't find her in 1861 or 71.

Thanks again

Hi Andy

There is an entry at the Durham County Council Registrar Indexes that you may want to look into when you have Ann's father's name from the marriage certificate.

Ann Gardner 1860 Durham Northern (Benfieldside).

I have sent off for the marriage certificate again.
Its quite bizarre but the first application was knocked back.
I suspect that it was a jobsworth who rejected it as I asked for Ann rather than Annie!
I have reapplied just in the grooms name.
I have also sent for her daughters birth certificate.
Hopefully that should settle it!

Thanks for your help

Kind Regards
