Whitby Gazette 1903 Hannah Breckon
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 01:32 BST (UK) »

Hi

I believe  that there is a death notice in the Whitby Gazette of Hannah Breckon who died on 29 June 1903 aged 72yrs.

Would anybody have an idea on how I can find out the wording of the death notice, any clues of where I can find a copy of the original newpaper.

Any idea or suggestion on finding the actual notice would be great. I think the notice is that of my GGGGMothers death

Unless you can find someone who lives in Whitby and could look it up, your best bet would be to write to the local library.  They should have a copy or be able to tell you where to find one.

Hi there!

I’ve just started tracing my family tree and have found Breckons from Whitby, so thought I’d contact you.

From the dates given, Hannah was born around 1831, and seems to be the same one that appears on the 1841 census with parents Thomas (born c.1790) and Hannah senior (born c.1811). If I’ve gotten this correct, my GGG Grandmother Elizabeth Jane Breckon (born in Whitby c.1827) is her older sister or half sister.

I have been trying to find out more about the family, in particular, who Elizabeth’s mother was, and because there’s only a few years between their births, they could well have the same mother. Things are complicated by the fact that her father, Thomas Breckon, the local butcher and Inn Keeper, was widowed twice and married 3 times, fathering a total of 26 children. (I know all this from a historian’s research article, which although focussing on her husband, Matthew Walker - related to the Walker family in Whitby who apprenticed Captain Cook, gave some background on the Breckon family).

Did you manage to find that death notice and do you have her death certificate yet? I do know that Elizabeth immigrated to Australia some time in the 1850’s and ended up in Queensland. I’d love to hear from anyone who has connections to this branch of the family and will be happy to share any information I have.

Cheers,

Nikki.

Hi Nikki

Since the post in 1995 I found my Ann/ Hannah. She died 29 June 1903 in Barnsley, her name was then Ann Pape.

During her life she married a number of times. Ann /Hannah was born a  Bradshaw, married John Lane was widowed then married a John Clark, turned up on the 1871 census as Ann Guest by 1881 she was the wife of William Pape, 1891 and 1901 still Ann Pape a widow.

Back in 1995 I knew the date of death and that she was called Ann or Hannah I was hoping that the notice regarding Hannah Breckon was my Hannah.

Good luck on your search

Hi Cass,

Thanks for your prompt reply and glad to hear you sorted out your Hannah!

I'm just wondering if you have a copy of that death notice, as I still believe it to be my GGG grandmother's sister. I will still try to find it if you don't have it, as it may give me a clue as to the mother of my Hannah.

Good luck to you too!

Why not email the Whitby Library and ask them if they have the newspapers archived?

As you have an exact date it makes it much easier lookup assuming they have the papers.

Nikki

I never found a copy of the notice, in fact I cannot even remember how I found that there was one, it must have been as a result of a google search. Once I find what I am after I  "bin" all the prints of search results, that are no longer relevent to my family

Hi again,

Thanks anyway for that. I just thought I'd ask on the off chance that you had a copy. I didn't realize this was in 1995 - the date just says "05", so I'm surprised you remember anything about this at all!

I shall definitely contact the Whitby Library to see if there are copies of the Gazette, so thanks Charlotte for the suggestion. I really appreciate your input.

Best wishes,

Nikki.

Have you seen the Jeff Knaggs site in which he has recorded lots of deaths for the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th. Found 2 Papes and lots of Breckons. Don't know if it will be of any use to you?

Hi!

Thanks a lot for the reference to Jeff Knaggs' site, and no I didn't know about it before. It is a wealth of information, and will be useful for some of my other research as well!

I'll let you all know how I fare with the Whitby Library. So far, I've only checked out their site to see what they have online.

Cheers,

Nikki.
